References are certainly inferior but to call it shitty is a bit too neo/v/, even for me.

It seems to be a pretty solid piece of hardware, even when you buy vanilla.

I'm holding out though.

I am a 970 and the "3.5 incident" hurts me pretty great. Don't get me wrong, the card runs great, I can run most modern games on ultra setting no problem.
But the point is I'm running dual monitors, and it's pretty easy to kick 970 to its "limit" while running both monitor at the same time. I can get Witcher 3 to run at full fps if it's the only problem running, but from rate drops to 30 or even worse if I got YouTube playing musics on the second monitor.
I am at the edge of upgrade, but I'm not sure if 1080 is a waste of money at this point. The specs for 1080 sounds like overkill in 2016. Should I wait for 1070 to see if this is a better alternative, or should I go for 1080 now?
>>
Y'all niggaa should wait for Polaris, if not for AMDs stuff, then for Nvidia if they drop prices to compete.

I'm not sure if I want to go with AMD again if their cards are loud.

That guy is absolutely right though, there is almost no reason to buy the x80 in a series of nVidia graphics card because the x80ti will be way better and only a few months afterwards. I would buy EVGA if I were getting an x80 and hope that the ti comes out within the window.

Considering the benchmarks I've seen on the 1080 in 4K, it's worth the money. Solid 60fps in every game tested.

SLI Titans have a hard time doing this.

Hope they sell only a few of 1080 cards.
If the demand is not high, the 1070 card should be cheaper.

I'm a complete newfag when it comes to computers, but the 1080 is an NVIDIA card, right?

Why are there different companies associated with the 1080? Like Zotac and msi? Is this like a steam console thing, where each company has their own 1080, provided to them by NVIDIA?

To optimize and fix potential issues with the current software applications. Maybe current drivers can fix the serious issues, but Nvidia doesn't optimize for older architectures for shit. I haven't seen any improvement in FPS whatsoever for years. I haven't seen the drops either: I even installed older drivers to check whether meme is real or not. It's not

Optimized crossfire games on a 295x2 or the double 390 card from power color are as close as you are going to get to a single card 4k solution.

I play in 3k (5760x1080) using a 295x2, was also able to run games at 4k (3840x2160) but in the end the 4gb per GPU is its weak point.

With Vulcan on the horizon there will be GPU wars still. But the 1080 needs more VRAM than 8gb....

sorry, meant to say single-chip instead of single card
you're absolutely right, though, 4-8GB is way too small a pool to draw from for 4K at 60+
I think the hope is that HBM will negate the need for such high VRAM requirements, but things like mods will always require more memory

The 1080/1070 cards are finally ushering in the death of 1080p 60hz monitors

If you buy these cards and don't have either a 1080p 144hz, 1440p 60/144hz, or 4K monitor you are wasting the potential of these cards

>>339053180
guarantee you're going to run into vram problems real soon since the 1000 series have 8gb of vram. suddenly newer games are going to require 6gb of vram even though the games look the fucking same.

>>
>>339069021
If you are playing at 1080 you are just wasting money... This card is made to specifically address resolutions larger than 1k and also to take advantage of high refresh rates.

Your 980 970 780s will still be more than ok for 1080 60hz
>>

I didn't preorder it because it's overkill or 1080p. The new AMD line up will release a R9 390 follower with lower watt usage for the same price. And that will be more than enough for 1080p.

Enjoy your GTX 1080, it's probably only good for 1440p or 4k

Honestly, a 980 is probably overkill for 1080p at 60hz. A 960 or R9 380 or 380x would be plenty to run modern games maxed out. Unless you want to do VR meme-goggles or higher resolutions/framerate, you already spent too much.
