Yeah I think their dumbest mistake was trying to compare themselves directly with Overwatch. Battleborn doesn't play anything like Overwatch and Overwatch is much more of a traditional FPS than Battleborn. Battleborn is a first person perspective ASSFAGOTS, and trying to market it as a potential alternative to people interested in Overwatch was suicide. If you like ASSFAGOTS then maybe Battleborn is your cup of tea, but I played it and I thought it was dreadfully boring.
Between the two I would have chosen Overwatch, but since my brothers bought Battleborn I decided to hell with it and just bought Doom. I believe it does but heroes in that game could not level up and didnt have skills. It's vastly different from DotA, which was made in Warcraft and the genre gained traction there. Not to mention DOTA2 has mechanics that emulate the warcraft 3 engine to make it as close to the original as possible.

Picture some medium-range company (like Gearbox) suddenly deciding to make a MMO that cuts right into the market of WoW and FFXIV, with similar mechanics, gameplay, but severely watered down, uglier graphics and character design and next to no costumer support.
