Undertale couldn't have been released at a better time. Earthbound sold poorly and was panned in its time, but these days people have analyzed it more and a lot of people wanted the sort of odd atmosphere Earthbound has.
So Undertale delivered it, and its success was measured by its sales. Toby Fox is a fucking millionaire now.
I'm going to ruffle some feathers and say the Undertale is actually better than Earthbound...when it comes to gameplay. Despite everything, it doesn't manage to capture the same atmosphere of Earthbound.
The world is empty, seriousness leaks in at inopportune moments, and it doesn't keep the bizarro train rolling long enough. Presumably this was because it was trying to be its own thing. and only inspired by Earthbound instead of blatantly copying it, but I don't think it worked well in its favor. There's a reason the first two sections of the game are much better than the rest of it overall.
It's just funny to me that the parts where Undertale surpasses Earthbound are the parts that weren't what made Earthbound popular in the first place.Also the media reviews of it are fucking cancer. Way to ruin a developer for fucking ever by raising his first work to the level of "perfection"
