It's basically the closest thing vidya has to arthouse shit, surprisingly. The history before and during its release is very controversial too, so those 2 things alone make it worth more to collectors and bootlegs. On top of that, it's in the horror genre which has high standards to begin with, at least at that time. There's a lot more minute details too, but it essentially pushed all the right buttons to be so incredibly inflated price wise, whether it's worth it is a personal choice.

Watching people play through the mermaid boss I thought it was invincible and they were messing something like typical play through idiots. Every boss in this game was frightening and could fuck you up in a few hits. The gameplay could have been way better, but it's far from unplayable and everything else is so great and worth it it's not really a problem. Plus it's probably the only game when you can beat opponents with a butter knife.
