To me the gameplay was clunky and rather awful. Despite being a die hard fan I had zero objection to the change up in gameplay, and found my self becoming excessively bored by level three.
I will say the music is far and ways miles ahead of anything in the first two games, despite its irritating recycling of old themes and lack of any real distinctive melodies. I'd take it over the simplified midi stuff we may wind up with in YL, though.
