However, when Americans think of "the south" they dont typically think in terms of actual geographic direction, but instead in a sort of shared cultural heritage between the southern states.
Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina are what is considered "deep south". Its where you find the typical southern accent and a fond love of jesus and country music.
While yes some of those traits are shared with Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida, the cultural history of those three states are slightly different from that of the deep south. Alot of it can be traced to the civil war, most of the confederate states west of the mississippi river were pretty much undisturbed by the union armies during the war and didnt really have to suffer through very much economic reconstruction and as such are typically more financially successful than the deep south. As for florida, it really doesnt share much in common with the rest of the union in general. its mostly just filled with meth addicts and cubans.
