What is the best helmet in all of vidya and why is it the sallet?
Because it's light, easy and comfortable to wear for long durations of time, and it provides respectable degree of vision and doesn't hinder breathing too much (in relation to (great)bascinets, armets and other contemporary helmet designs).
>>338843995
I wasn't actually expecting a reply that actually would answer the question.
I was really just hoping to spark off some discussion about armors in video games, in general, but I guess my thread will 404 soon anyway.

I think that's armet
Anyone know if there are any helmets like pic related?
>>338843513
The sallet looks really good and offers respectable protection for it's comfort. But pic related, despite looking like utter shit, is a very well designed helmet.
The beak deflects thrusting strikes to the face, the upper point deflects vertical strikes, it offers admirable vision without sacrificing defense, and it's not as cumbersome.
That said you look like an idiot unlike the sallet which makes you look kewl.

The advantage I see this helmet has over the sallet is that the latter requires massive gorgets to protect the lower head.

The holes on the beak are actually pretty good holes to see through. You won't be sniping with it, but it's good enough to see your immediate surrounding.
Most "breathing holes" in helmets serve as seeing holes too.
Viking helmet. Always gives an attack boost.
>>338846543
You usually wear sallets with massive fucking gorgets (neck protection) that basically covers the vulnerable part. This offers great protection but poor visibility since you can't see what's immediately under you.

Viking helmets didn't have horns.

Bascinets aren't really comparable to sallets, sallets were used when bascinets fell out of favour because they were considered inferior. Different time period, different needs, usually lower quality metal.

The style of helmet is usually either an armet or a close helmet. Which it is exactly depends on the opening mechanism. An armet opens laterally, while a close helmet (a later design) is hinged at the visor. Also, the bevor in an armet was usually a chinstrap that would come as a separate part, while in the close helmet the bevor was an integral part of the helmet. A further development from that point would be the Mantelhelm, which also integrated the gorget into the helmet.
Here we have an armet one can see the lateral joints near the visor hinges and see how it would open sideways if one looked at it from the front.
The armet and later close helmet was essentially an Italian design, but not exclusively popular in Italy. The suit in >>338845576 for example was made in Nuremberg by Kunz Lochner. There also were armets and close helmet with different visors, e.g. the bellows visors which were commonly worn with Maximilian style armour.
>>338848594
Samurai were good warriors but I don't think they trained in grappling martial arts so a knight decked in steel armor that stands a head taller would wreck a samurai up close.
>>338848480
The knobs are for arrows afaik, if an arrow hits the helmet and doesn't immediately deflect it moves towards the knob and deflects after that instead of moving towards your throat/neck.
>>338848750
For comparison, here we have a close helmet. One can see that the opening mechanism is hinged at the visor. You open the whole helmet just like you can raise the visor. And you don't need to strap an extra defence around your neck because it became an integral part.
>>338848842

Stechhelm stems from the name of the tournament discipline called 'Gestech' or 'Stechen', also called the 'joust of peace'.
Here the goal was to break the lance on your opponent's armour or unhorse your opponent.
Heavy armour was used here and the lances were solid wood, tipped with steel coronets.

Presumably, they were very well aware of the disadvantages as the more rounded helmets existed alongside the typical crusader helmets and yet the latter still didn't fall out of use.
>>338850463
In contrast we have the 'joust of war', also called 'Rennen' or 'Carrière'; ("race").
In the joust of war, regular field armour was used, reinforced with a thick wooden shield ('Renntartsche', "racing targe"). The goal was to unhorse your opponent or to pierce the targe and lift it from its mount. Regular war tips were used here, which made the whole thing rather dangerous.
Due to the fact that knights could participate with their regular field armour rather than the thick armour required for the joust of peace, this was particularly popular among poorer knights who couldn't afford the expensive equipment.

They actually modified this sort of helmet. It became more conical over time to allow for better deflection. Also, the helmet became much larger, turning into the great helm, to allow for a smaller skullcap bascinet to be worn underneath. They'd wear the great helm for the initial charge, then take it off while in melee combat in order to breath and see better. The great helm would be tied with a chain or strap to their armour and could be worn on their back like a backpack.

>>338850846
I know you're joking, or using some copy pasta. But real world battles are mostly fought with spears, lances and bows. The Samurai's main weapon for most of their history was... the bow. And then the gun.
The Japanese did the same. Their weapons and armor are based around a low level of Iron. The katanas are kinda flimsy thin curved swords. They were used mostly as status symbols and self-protection. A katana is great at slicing a peasant in half. Not so good at using against an armored opponent.
Bushido also was mostly formulated after peace was established. It's a romanticized view of Samurai. Real world they could be as ruthless and untrust worthy as anyone else.

A curved top deflects the force partially outwards. So there is a real reduction in the amount of damage to a curved top helment when hit from above.
A flat top has no protection from blows from above. The force is directed directly down on your neck and head. So enjoy your broken neck.

I have always wondered.
Obviously people will say that you should wear a helmet to protect you from all kinds of harm from different directions.
But it seems to me like it would dull your senses too.
You can´t see shit.
Except for the thin slits, or holes here and there, you should be able to see with your eye corners despite being mostly blind except for the spot you´re looking at without a helmet, for that extra bit of spatial recognition.
Your hearing gets deafened.
You can´t anticipate the direction anymore, and even then when you get hit, the metal can generate a loud sharp noise which can deafen your ears even more.
Smell also gets limited for a bit i guess.
It would be handy to smell something flammable or rotten beforehand.
As for touch.
A helmet isn´t really comfortable either. It has weight to it, will probably store up heat and sweat as well, aside from constantly feeling your breath bounce back in your mouth.
Not even trying to bait, i just want to understand if wearing a helmet is that much more important instead of something simpler like a head-guard or even nothing.

lmao, as a typical footsoldier it wouldn't be strange to receive a couple dozen arrows to the body & head before even getting into melee range (see: Agincourt, the majority of man-at-arms on the French side were actually captured, not killed, because their heavy armours couldn't be penetrated by arrows alone).

I like how fights between two heavy armored guys on foot usually devolves to just trying to wrestle each other to the ground. I wish there was a game that had this.

Of course not,not saying that. It was protestants. But show me how Shiite are better than Sunnis.
>>338851763
knights were the upper class. They were terrified of hails of arrows and wanted to encase themselves in steel. And it did hamper them. You can't see shit, you can't hear shit, people can't really hear you, your breath condenses in the helm and it's generally horribly uncomfortable. They didn't have it because it was the armor provided for war, they had it because they were rich enough to buy it and wanted to feel safe on the battlefield. Plate armor that allows practical levels of mobility and vision didn't arise until the late medieval period, until then being in full armor meant the only move you can do in a fight is charge with a lance.

You know how common bucklers were on battlefields in which not as many soldiers had full armor on?
Shields are also viable weapons, which is correctly represented in the Souls games. Catch someone's incoming swing with your own sword and redirect it, then bash a vital part of the enemy's body with the edge or ball of the buckler. You'll probably break a wrist and disable them or if you hit their head they'll be mildly stunned enough for you to finish them off.

Two-handed swords were usually used by elite mercenaries, who also received double the pay for it. In civilian times they were commonly found in the arsenal of personal guards, and they were employed to guard artillery. When it comes to the cutting off pikes part there's a bit of doubt, but they definitely also found their way into 16th century pike formations. Whether they cut off the enemy pikes or just protected the flanks is questionable though.
In general, these weapons shouldn't be underestimated. They were fierce duelling weapons, as they essentially combined the advantages of a pole-arm and a sword in one weapon.

this
an english archer during the hundred years war would get 12 crowns per day as payment.
the average sword cost was 3-5 for a new sword. So an archer could literally buy a new sword every day.

Don't even give me that pvp bullshit argument. Souls games aren't fighting games, they never were about pvp so go fuck yourself. There isn't a worse feeling than the one you get when you realize cool armor in a game does jack-fucking-shit.

Not cutting off pikes, but cutting into their formations. Deflecting the pikes, opening them up for attack.

>Whoever wore wore that must have just been batshit on the battlefield.
It was a gift of Emperor Maximilian I to Henry VIII. So if it was worn, it was worn by Henry VIII. It was likely meant to be costume armour though - although functional enough to be protective, it wasn't to be worn at battlefields.

My guess would be late 15th or 16th century
and people of the middle ages had a different sense of humor, they would put dicks on their armor and engravings of demons fucking.
They would literally put a nutsack on the back handle of a dagger making it look like a cock.
I think it would be received well enough and its similiar to maximillian style armors.
