Not the guy you're talking to, but 'realism' is not a binary thing. In most cases these games are 'semi-realistic' in the sense that they're unrealistic about some parts but realistic about others. For example, the laws of physics supposedly apply the same for most part. Also, they're using materials that resemble materials we have in the real world - in some cases even the same. And that's why it's reasonable to expect the things that are the same to work like they do in the real world. If you have people in regular steel armour fight other people in regular steel armour under laws of physics that are the same for the most part, the result should be the same as in the real world - regardless if you also have magic in the setting.

I've already told you that the system you're talking about is partially realistic. Most fantasy settings involve regular steel weapons. In fact, in the beginning you rely on mostly totally normal equipment. Only later you get magic gear.

It can. The point is however that magic equipment is flagged as magic. And nobody would be complaining if the description said: "Chainmail bikini - enchanted to work as regular armour". What people complain about is that silly armour is supposed to work like regular armour without being magic. And that's where the suspension of disbelief is broken. Because that part of the game is supposed to work like the real world.
