I'm doing a sign playthrough on death march in preparation forhearts of stone. And I must say it's not as op as everyone's been saying.
It's also really irritating how you have to put points in skills you don't need to get to the next tier of talents. AND you don't even benefit from them, because you have to put skills into slots for them to be active, and there's not enough of them for even the skills you want, let alone the padding skills.
Although, I haven't got the griffin set yet. I wonder if I'll be able to just aard->execute everyone in the game with enough sign intensity?

The books themselves go into details about how monsters are often much more frequent during times of war and famine, and how there's also no-go-zones with plenty of monsters that humans just avoid.
For practical reasons, of course they can't always correlate perfectly with the books, but pretty much everything is still more or less there, or within the confines of what would make sense according to the lore. Also "fanfiction" is harsh. They have the rights to the series, and naturally they're doing their own thing with it, but don't compare it to the sweaty fan headcanons of other series.

Nilfgaard isn't necessarily evil but they're seen as the conquerors while you spend most of your time with the conquered. And game wise, it makes more sense to side with the conquered.
