Just finished Shantae from the humble bundle and became addicted to Metroidvania games. Metroid Zero Mission. Playing Castlevania Aria of Sorrow and Rabi-Ribi. Gonna play Super Metroid soon.
>>

is rabi ribi really dat good?

Aye. Very challenging too

I really like Unepic, even if the dialogue is cringe-worthy
>>
>>338584525
Shitty faux retro sprites.

I agree that the game parts are great though.
>>
>>338583734
Circle of the moon is also pretty solid despite a few bosses being ass, and Symphony of he Night is great.

Also Enviornmental Station Alpha is a solid game that's rather unknown. Valdis Story is also dope.
>>
>>338584637
Yeah, the art style was dumb and holy shit that final boss especially was retarded. I'm amazed the remake somehow picked an even worse art style.

The gameplay more than makes up for it in my mind though.
>>

>Valdis Story is also dope.

Hell yeah it is
>New gear is side-grades and build variety is all user preference even on the hardest difficulty.
>>
>>338583734
Was Shantae and the Pirates curse the one that came with the bundle? Because that one is better than the other PC releases Shantae.
>>
>>338585150
The big issue is having your towns get destroyed so you can't upgrade your armor right. I got stuck on the final boss like twice because my build was too ass to beat him on hard.
>>
>>338583598
wait, i thought we called them Castlemanias
>>
>>338586126
Nah, we call me meaty-metroid-likes.
>>
Strider from the humble capcom bundle is great, grab it now if you haven't.
Aquatic adventure of the last human is basically Shadow Planet underwater with pixel graphics. Its a lot harder and the ending sucks though.
Shadow Complex remastered is also great. Got it free using epic's shitty launcher, not sure if you can get it free now.
>>
>>338586465

Strider and Shadow Complex were both terrible. Have you never played any decent metroidvanias?
>>
>>338586702

>hating Strider and Shadow Complex

WOW that shit taste
>>
>>338586041
The VERY final boss can be beaten by basically anything because all you have to do is reflect his balls back at his face.

But yeah, I guess if you go into the game blind, losing towns could be a problem, but you'll always have weapon and light/dark armor upgrades available, you'll only get locked out of neutral armors and some (really good) accessories like Weighted Bracers
>>
>>338583850
do you really think a game with that artstyle can be good?
you should know better
>>
What was the name of the hentai metroidvania?
>>
>>338584525

Same with Hero Core, though I imagine the TI-84 graphics turn most people off.
>>
How is Somewhere Out There?
>>
>>338586932
I think he meant the previous final boss because of the healing thing, I got stuck on that battle on my first run too because my build was super shitty.
>>
>>338587129
Its a puzzle game mostly
I don't consider it a metroidvania
>>
>>338587276

>>
>>338584576
You have to play Unepic on spanish (original languaje), the dialogs are much better.

>>338586997

>>
>>338586892

Strider is an awkward attempt to adapt an arcade game into a metroidvania format; it doesn't work at all. In the absence of carefully designed stages, the button mashing close combat mechanics come off as tedious and all of the bosses save for maybe the last couple are both easy and boring as shit. Also, the devs didn't have a clue how to properly implement special attacks and ended up with mediocre and rarely useful secondary weapons.

Shadow Complex was basically a generic FPS shoved into a metroidvania format, there's nothing decent about it. Color-coded locks from the start to show retards how to explore and underwhelming shitty combat mechanics that had no thought put into them. Oh yes, we totally want to reload boring generic assault rifles in a metroidvania with really bad background aiming mechanics.
>>

Salt & Sanctuary's really damn good. Easily the best indie Metroidvania I've played. About on par with SoTN and the DS Castlevania games. Haven't felt strongly about anything else really. Bunny Must Die was somewhat interesting but the sloppiness ruined it. Environmental Station Alpha had consistently good boss fights and enjoyable platforming but felt too by-the-numbers and the exploration was unrewarding. Momodora was quite good but too short and the combat was kinda tedious. Outland, Valdis Story and Ori just felt like I was playing on autopilot for the sake of finishing them. Haven't played Ribi Rabi yet and hear it's good, but the genre overall has been feeling very stale.
>>
>>338588107

probably haven't played most of their games then.
>>
>>338587846
It's very good, but not flawless. Has good build variety, the bosses are solid, exploration's pretty good and the game has a lot of room for sequence breaking. Locations are nice and varied and neatly comnected together although most of the shortcuts felt like they were there just for the sake of it and weren't useful. Combat is satisfying too, although there are some issues with enemies switching directions too suddenly and awkward grab attacks. Weapons have very similar movesets too which is a shame but understandable.
>>
>>338583850

It's a bit overrated around here. Exploration ranges from decent to pretty good depending on how perceptive you are of hidden passages. The dev has made a number of accommodations for 0% runs, so it's worth at least a few playthroughs just to try out how different it can be compared to a 100% run.

The dialogue is acceptable if you're used to weeabo conversations. A bit of implied yuri, but nothing erotic. Some anime/game in-jokes here and there, no may-mays though.

Bosses on Hard mode are just challenging enough to require a few (3~5) deaths to overcome. On higher difficulties, expect to become a bunny hopping master or face extermination. Also, bosses scale depending on number of items, so you want to avoid picking up unnecessary upgrades on maximum difficulty.
>>
>>338587970
just make sure you equip the gold and silver rings before meeting Maria at the clock, then wear the glasses she gives you during the fight with Richter so you can destroy the orb.
>>
>>338588129
The exploration in Vladis Story and Ori are both pretty limited, but they're solid games. Vladis has a bigger focus on combat and Ori is more about platforming.

Enviornmental Station Alpha is underrated though, and it's dirt cheap.
>>
>>338588591

I know, right? I'm really obsessed about that at the moment. Hell, I've already got a bunch of A4's with a detailed map of the game drawn on them. Just to make sure I won't miss anything. I progress slower because of that, but it's really exciting to pay that amount of attention to the game world since it's really nicely crafted.
>>
>>338588129
I platined Salt & Sanctuary and it's very poor. The controls are bad and the map is terribly connected. A DkS fan will enjoy more this game than a metroidvania fan.
Rabi-Ribi is the best metroidvania since Order of Ecclesia. Shantae Pirate's Curse and Ori are hard contenders.
>>

Just feels like it would be better if they gave you more powers early on and then had more stages built around it since the final moveset is really fun but you only get to use it for a very short while and NG+ is too familliar and easy

It's the other way around, the game is more like a metriodvania, castlevania even.

How so? What's wrong with the controls? Also elaborate on the map connections. I enjoyed it more as a Metroidvania game than a Souls game because despite ripping off a lot of Souls mechanics and elements the 2D perspective, combat, platforming and movement made it play like Castlevania more than anything.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is pretty easy.
>>
>>338590148
Hated the shit physics, linear progression, barebones combat, instakill shit everywhere with checkpoints at every screen to compensate. Kept playing anyway and I've gotta say, it really grew on me. Most of the issues were still there, but the insane amount of optional content made it really rewarding to explore, and the extra weapons you could get were both unique and satisfying to use.
>>
>>338590341
>Ori
It has good visuals, but I came off unimpressed. Not sure why people suck so hard on it's dick.
>>
>>338590436

Its visual and audio design were gorgeous enough on its own to please me, but I enjoyed its momentum a lot as well. I just wish there could have been boss battles instead of those instant kill running sequences.
>>
What did you guys think of Guacamelee? Ithe was pretty barebones when it came to exploration but I found the combat to be pretty well meshed with the movement mechanics. Memes aside I digged the art style and music as well.
>>
>>338590646

>>

It's a shame they listened to the one fucker on the team that said they should add more memes. They regret ever doing that after the reception it got.
>>
>>338590092
No map
The roll is very imprecise
The combat is limited, you can only hit in front of you
The traps re-activate every time you rest on a shrine making them annoying as fuck
The platform levels with huge downfalls are annoying
The biomes are almost the same during all game
The tree of skill is bad, they could have also copied the dark souls leveling method

I enjoyed the game but it is a bad metroidvania and a good dks clone
>>
>>338590646
Very enjoyable. Any other co-op castleoid?
>>
>>338590646
I really liked it, the music was really really good in some areas too. I'd play a sequel and I'll likely buy the physical version when LRG prints it. Same goes for Ori and the Blind Forest getting a physical soon.
>>
>>338590792
>co-op castleoid
apparently Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is one, though I don't remember it too well.
>>
>>338589409
Items you pick up in the game doesn't scale bosses as hard as equipping badges do. Feel free to get all the upgrades you can find and buy.

Damage items and playing very aggressive with the sun ray boost helps a lot. Makes bosses skip certain patterns.
>>
>Needing a map

>Not counting Rolls, Jumps heavy, light attacks and combos into combat

>Getting hit by the same trap twice

>falling down holes

>implying the level design isn't vastly different in each section

Some real compaints would be not using enough platforming elements in boss fights, I haven't fought anything that uses the wall jump yet.

Being familiar with the characters provides an additional "oh you..." feeling, plus it's pretty different from the rest of the series since Shantae can't actually transform in this Pirate's Curse.
>>
>>338590598
The games combat system wasn't really built for bosses and more around platforming so I can see why they made it that way.

Still, that whole dashing mechanic was really neat. Don't think I've ever seen a similar system.
>>
>>338590771
>No map
Good, maps dumb down the genre and remove critical thought from exploration.
>The combat is limited, you can only hit in front of you
That's how it works in most games in the genre. There's nothing wrong with limited combat if the mechanics themselves are engaging and well balanced, and they were in Salt & Sanctuary. What exactly do you want?
>The tree of skill is bad
The fuck? How so? It's very similar to Dark Souls levelling except more interesting since there is a bigger degree of planning involved, and the weapon tier skills are useful even if you don't plan on using the weapons.

Agreed with the rest

>>338591923
Difficulty adds to the exploration. The most obvious example of this is with save points. The more difficult the encounters in the game are and the longer it expects you to go without save points, the more enjoyable discovering them becomes. Same applies to other things like upgrades, although to a lesser extent. You don't need to make them as difficult as arcade games or anything but keeping the player on edge goes a long way in this genre.

Zelda is fucking hard as balls to pull off development wise. The games tend to have far more non-trivial interaction in them than you'd get in a Metroid, which otherwise tend to play out as a single large dungeon instead of the variety of overworld/underworld structures Zelda has.

Calling it a metroidvania is almost a stretch as there's very very few restrictions on where you can go but it does feature an open map you explore so I think most people would think of it as one

Literally the only fault I have with it is that I wish it was longer

I've never played any other Momodora game so I can't say how it compares to those

It has extremely limited RPG-esque progression as well so you never really grossly overpower enemies, even those from the start of the game. This is a plus to me but for some people it'll seem bad

>Calling it a metroidvania is almost a stretch as there's very very few restrictions

I liked it a lot, but since you can do most area in any way you like I fought the Pardoner first after the first two mandatory bosses, it was a hard fight but very fun, the downside is that all the other bosses felt lacking and very easy. Going to her seemed the more logical progression to me too. The last boss was kind of a letdown too, it was pretty easy nut it looked great and the soundtrack was pretty awesome overall. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ls98Vx_v4aU

Personally I love it. Exploration has many hidden items, and even if many are in pretty obvious places, there are some you probably won't find without the item radar.

Boss battles are the meat of the game. Combat has a lot of depth for maximizing your damage output and you will seriously not make it far if you can't dodge for shit, depending on difficulty.

I expected something that required a little bit more thought than just abusing how rolling works to easily kill bosses.

>But it isn't linear, you have to either specialize or be mediocre at everything for NG unless you grind a lot.

That is exactly why it's linear. If you made a cleric in another game without a skill tree like in S&S, it would give you Wisdom automatically upon leveling up. You pretty much have to go that route anyway in S&S anyway, so the skill tree is not needed in the slightest. Skill trees are there for when you can actually have variety in your builds.

>I expected something that required a little bit more thought than just abusing how rolling works to easily kill bosses.
Like what? Most games in the genre are about as shallow combat-wise. You have some kind of unreasonable expectations.
>skill tree
Making a cleric in another game would give you wisdom automatically but in order to get skills from other classes you would need to reroll your character. In S&S you can remove skill points or for instance go up a branch of your choice a little bit to get what you want without going to the high level unlocks. It's not the biggest deal in the world but it's not even close to being linear. For example you can make either a cleric that wears light armor or a tanky heavy armor one, each one requires you to go up different branches.

Like adding in one of the most basic parts to any shmup. Platforming. Have bosses not just be as simple as "Oh look, he's about to attack, now I'm going to do the same thing I do with every boss and roll behind him, hit him once or twice, and then wait for him to do the exact same thing until he dies".

>For example you can make either a cleric that wears light armor or a tanky heavy armor one, each one requires you to go up different branches.
Boring and might as well be considered linear.
The ideal skill tree has multiple ways of playing each class in more ways that some passive that allows you to wear different armor.

A good example of a well built skill tree would have something like a mage for example, be able to specialize in certain elements depending on which way he goes.
>>

There are boss fights where you can't roll around like a fargoth. Try to play the game longer than one hour next time before emptying your fat bowels on it.
>>
>>338603662
>Like adding in one of the most basic parts to any shmup.
There's some bullet streaming later in the game since bosses have projectile attacks that you cannot dodgeroll through. There are more AOE/elemental attacks that you cannot dodge through and have to position yourself preemptively, etc.
>Platforming
Becomes a huge part of the game, one boss is entirely based around it.
>The ideal skill tree has multiple ways of playing each class
Yes, the ideal skill tree's like that but that doesn't mean anything less than that is automatically unnecessary. It allows more flexibility than a linear system, and makes the levelling more engaging since there's a degree of planning involved.
>>

Harmony of Dissonance is the black sheep but it's still a good game and has a very nice mazey map design which I enjoyed a lot although it's not for everyone. CoTM is also kind of the weird one of the bunch because it tries to be a mix of the classic Castlevania games and new ones, but it's very nice and the most challenging together with Order of Ecclesia.

>>
>>338592092
That's actually a really good point. Difficulty really does make you feel the reward of going out of your way to find new health and weapon power ups. Like at the start of Super Metroid it's a great feeling to pick up an E-tank, but at the end of the game you really don't care that much about them and finding another missle upgrade when you have almost 200 missles feels like nothing.

Maintaining a solid difficulty could make upgrades much more valuable.

I'm a much bigger fan of save rooms being marked outside their doors. The potential to go all the way through a level missing every save room until the end could be exceedingly frustrating. Space Station Alpha did that and I really hope more games copy it there.

>>338597113

You're damn near describing Valdis Story. The game kinda railroads you at the start but it eventually opens up. You get 4 select-able characters and you can build them 4 different ways based off of their stats. There's armor's you can make out of materials found through the game and most of the magics you get are elemental based. It's pretty dope.

I never said I beat him on my first try though. I never even implied that beating that boss was impressive either. If that would be considered impressive then /v/ would have dropped to a whole new level of bad in my eyes.

>None of you will ever have a dedicated fanboy following you around thread after thread, for years, all because you blew them the fuck out in every single game they've ever played.

Lads, what the fuck are you even doing with your lives? Go get your very own fanboy now.

The biggest of all metroidvania maps.

It's porn.

Is that Bloody Vampire? It was ok, the bumping takes a while to get used to and can glitch occasionally.

>I beat that unspeakable deep or whatever it's called, got about one hour further into the game and then dropped it

So you kept restarting the game until you got him? You're so full of shit, did you know that?

Hey little girl, this is what you want right? Guess it can't be helped...

How does that prove he bragged about beating it? Looks like he's just casually mentioning it to me.
>>

I'm Hispanic and was extremely offended by this title. I don't even like guac.
How would you feel if someone made a US-themed game with cheeseburgers made into some kind of pun in the title?

He said that earlier in this thread:

Yes? It's like 30 seconds into the game. What, you didn't even try to go back to beat him? lmao, why are you so shit at video games?

>>338607865
Give me some more.
>>
>>338608316
Jesus nigga, no wonder you think the game is shit. You spent time fighting by far most simplistic and shitty boss in the game while sitting through the character creation and a cutscene. Would make anyone want to uninstall it.

Only took me like 15 minutes worth of tries. Unfortunately most of that was ate up due to making it past the initial set of enemies before the boss.
Character creation seems to save certain options, I remember only needing to change my hairstyle and class which took quite literally 2 seconds. The rest of the stuff was as I wanted them.

this whole you shit spiraled outta control fast

I beat Super Metroid, Symphony of the Night, Guacamelee and La-Mulana yet I still thought that Rabi-Ribi was fantastic
>>

Best game ever.

Yeah, I can't stand how every woman seems to have a large head while the men seem fairly proportion.

I just pirated salt and sanctuary. How do you build if you're a mage/cleric? Do i just grab all of the main stat boosting nodes or?
>>
>>338590364
gotta agree

the hardest part is not popping a chub and fapping while playing.
>>
>>338609287

I'm honestly surprised you didn't get him on the first try. It has like two different moves and roll works ridiculously well against it. Easiest, if the most tedious fight in the game.
>>
>>338593330
>Fuck that bastardization on the psp
What? Isn't it just an emulated original?
>>
>>338593330
It's objectively the best version of the game.
>>
>>338612735
The Sodden Knight is much easier.
>>
>>338612764

It was redubbed.
>>
>>338612764
The dub was from the Sega Saturn version of SotN.
They fixed the horrible/iconic lines from the original playstation release.
>>
>>338585797
The hb one was Risky's revenge, which is not nearly as good as the Pirate's curse imo
>>
It's not a true metroidvania if you can't do shit like this.
>>
The genre has essentially died to me.
New games in the subgenre such as Ori and Guacamelee are very poor to me.

Maybe I'm just too used to the castlevania rehashes, but then again I played that indie super metroid-looking game and I thought it was good (main character aside which completely shit the bed)

I think, I love the focus on exploration and finding secrets the most. That's why I love La Mulana.
