One of the few Tales to achieve a decent balance of quality between gameplay and story. Almost everything in the game has been done better by later entries but I'd still give it a try.
Vesperia is generally considered to be the best Tales game. You'll need a 360 or a modded PS3 to play it in English.

Last really good Tales game before you could really tell shit started to get axed from subsequent titles. Packed to the brim with content and should last you good 35-40 hours just for basic playthrough but there's a metric ton of optional content.

This is a completely standard storytelling trope for fantasy epics. Present an epic conflict that took place years before the current story, to stoke the imagination of the readers/players. And it's always really just a case of "grass is greener" - if the "previous war" was the main story and the current main story was the "previous war", we would all have thought the same thing.

It's a very top-tier entry, but as one of the first forays into full-on 3D its combat is a bit more primitive compared to Abyss and definitely Vesperia's.
Still, it's got a strong cast of likeable characters and a not terrible story, so it's still got quite a lot going for it compared to other Tales titles, especially the recent ones.
The PS3 ones go on sale fairly often, or you could just get the solid ToSHD thing on the cheap anyway.
I think the only real issue is that it's got quite a great dub but it was still incomplete when it came out on Gamecube, and with all the stuff they implemented in the PS3 re-release it's still even more incomplete.

After a few patches and with ToSfix, the PC version ends up being the definitive version. The only thing it's lacking is 60fps, but it has all the ps2 content, the ps3 cameo costumes and can do 4k resolutions and antialiasing (though I only run it in 1080p myself).
If you run the GCN version at higher resolutions it stretches and warps the UI and looks like shit.

In FFX you spend the whole game going through the whole pilgrimage, learn that it was all a sham, and then proceed directly to the final dungeon. Like.. the series traditionally has a Jpop intro, but for western releases they make an instrumental "classical" track instead. They continued that shit until Vesperia, where they were able to have the singer (Bonnie Pink) do both an English and Japanese version of the same song. They did the same thing for Graces f.
I haven't played the Xillias but didn't they do the same? Or is it like Zestiria where they just drop the vocals completely but use the same instrumental track rather than making an "orchestral" theme?

Mostly because she's emotionally stunted. I mean it's not entirely her fault but even after they get her key crest and all working she still acts mostly the same, the only things that really change is that she realized her dad is dead and needed to bury him. Most of her development is tied to Regal's development but Regal doesn't sound like an autist in dialogue about it.
Either way she develops more than Kratos.. and it's arguable who develops more between her and Zelos. Zelos develops a bit more if you choose him, less if you choose Kratos.
If she didn't stay monotoned the entire game and still act autistic outside of her specific scenes regarding Alicia and Ozette, then I could see an arguement for her being between Colette and Genis (no higher though, Raine, Regal, Sheena, and Colette all develop more as characters regardless)

Stoic characters are great to me in that every showing of emotion is something special and unexpected. I feel like Presea had some nice development in moving outside of her comfort zone and living on after her father and sister's death, but it's probably muted to some by her stoic personality.

The plot is as predictable as they come, it's the first game with the 3d battle system and its age shows, and the characters are such literal tropes that raine and genus were called refill and genius in the japanese version who, as their names suggest, were the healer and mage characters.
Not a terrible entry, but there's better ones.

Did you ever see all of the sidequests involving Presea? A lot of her development happened in side material and picking her route.
Presea's development was handled realistically when it sounds like you wish she was instantly better overnight. Considering that she spent decades stuck in what was essentially a catatonic state and found out all at once that everyone she knew and loved died horrible deaths, I'd say Presea came out of the game alright.

my guess is that they were under so much pressure because they wanted the localized version to come out at the same time as the Japanese version that it stressed them out to work on and it still triggers them to this day.
Tales of Vesperia is one of the few Japanese games I know of to come out in North America just weeks after the Japanese version.

I'm gonna admit, I was really impressed by the subtler sections of foreshadowing in Symphonia. They were rare but good.
The fact that all Crucis-aligned party members used crosses as their magical focus (Collette across her body, Zelos traced in the air,Kratos, crossing his armswas rather neat.
There's also an amazing amount of in-character flexibility in the script. Ridiculous amount of (rather obvious) plot revealed by "Sure, why not" moments.

well, it was at the time, like I said, they were localizing at the same time as they were developing.. that usually doesn't happen. Usually they develop a game in Japanese, release it, then spend a few months or so localizing for the west, then release that.
Vesperia released in the US in the same Month it released in Japan. That had to have been mindblowingly hectic.
I can understand that they'd never want to go through that again.. it's just that, now, that wouldn't be the case.
