Isn't /v/ worried about the current state of operating systems? Recently, Microsoft released Windows 10, which is a horrible OS and includes built-in advertisements and spyware. Not only that, but they are forcing users to "upgrade" to this operating system, which makes it very clear that Microsoft believe this is the most advantageous way to exploit consumers, and everything in the near-future will be a slight variation of W10.

When will Windows go the same way as Internet Explorer (meaning, replaced by something vastly superior, by most people)? It's bound to happen eventually. Most technology enthusiasts dislike W10 and Microsoft can't hold their monopoly forever.

You can deactivate most of the telemetry system in the settings and deactivate even more with command lines.

No matter what Os you're using, you're still being spied upon. But you gotta be pretty fucking dumb to install Windows 10, spyware or not. Earlier on, Microsoft used to PAY people to test it prior to the release, but now it can just give it for "free" and once people hear "FREE" they must have it, hence why they fall of the scam and install it on their machine.

If you installed W10 at anytime during your lifetime, they used your dumbness to save money by having you to do the job of beta testing it for free.

I actually hope that Win10 will be adopted as fast as possible. DX12 has been proven to have massively superior performance to DX11, and Vulkan is still largely unproven and frankly the track record it has with its predecessor doesn't bode well at all.

Dont believe any of the telemetry blocking nonsense. You cant stop the surveillance at all. Forbes released an article interviewing someone that had worked on windows 10. Down to the kernel they gather data on you. keep in mind, this article was scrubbed afterwards, hard to "sell" a product when something like that is online. Hell, they've been logging everything you did even in windows vista.

Going full Rorshach paranoia while using Windows is just silly.

>All you really need is ublock, noscript, and common sense to not run suspicious programs.

At one point you could get infected via Firefox merely by viewing an image file. There was a rather nasty security vulnerability in the code that loaded the image.

You're a fucking idiot if you think you don't need to plug security holes in software because "common sense" will protect you.

But you can take solace in this, almost all Windows security vulnerabilities are not discovered, they are revealed when Microsoft releases a patch and people look to see what they changed. When Microsoft stops releasing patches the "discovery" of security vulnerabilities in obsolete versions of Windows drops to near zero.

Maybe not with Gluglug/libreboot laptops (modified thinkpad T60s, at best .001% of the population has one of those), but any recent computer with an intel/amd processor has proprietary firmware (the Intel Management Engine or whatever amd's counterpart is called) in it. This piece of software can get control of the entire machine at any time without any part of the OS knowing or noticing. Doubting that Intel/AMD have made deals with NSA and other agencies is, at best, childishly naive.

Theres a special version of XP that is still being updated with security updates for a branch of the military (I think the navy) because they cannot move onto a new OS.

I also doubt the story about the whole story about the XP being vulnerable when it connectst to the internet for several reasons.

1. I have yet to see actual examples of this.
2. Your modem will most likely block any remote attempts onto your machine

do you really know how an antivirus works? hell... do you know how a malware spreads?

Antiviruses protect users by identifying malicious executable software that gets into the computer. There is a good chance antivirus can detect this BEFORE the malware executes (which 90% of the time requires at least the help of the user).

Quarantine items are blocked for executing.

>The only thing that protect from virus is common sense and noscript
It's not the only thing but it's useful. Other things are:

-Using a user without admin permissions

Don't fucking upgrade or even do a fresh install.

These are all the problems I encountered with a fresh install:

>Startup time more than 1 minute, and yes, I tried the fixes for slow startups, it don't fucking work.
>It takes up to 10 seconds to open ANYTHING, whether you right click or just try to open up a fucking folder. Even the fucking start bar is fucked.

>HDD usage constantly at 50 - 99% which completely disables you from doing anything in the meantime
>Registries get fucked up almost daily. Any update or new installation of ANYTHING will fuck up the registries 78% of the time
>Icons disappearing, settings disappearing

And before someone states that I have a toaster, I built this PC no more than 2 years ago.

Never had these issues with Win7. Win8 is where the performance, due to shit services, started suffering.

This anon gets it.

A firewall can't hold everything on a machine, so you'll have to resort to hardware firewalls + routers, which then might have the juniper exploit from a few months ago.

Anyway:
- The first line of defense is to never ever fucking install or upgrade to win10, ever fucking ever in forever never ever ever.
- Second line of defense is that if you do, do it in a VM that's blocked off the internet both by hardware, and software. Preferably the VM software should be sandboxed as well with Sandboxie and such, to avoid HDD spying.
- Third line of defense is all the /g/ "tinfoil" shit they post.
- Fourth line of defense is all the "privacy protecting" software that you have install separately, leaving a window open for Microshit telemetry and others to spy on you during the process.
- Fifth line of defense, software firewall for win10
- Sixth line of defense, noScript + Ublocker in all the fucking browsers.
- Seventh line of defense: Never use EDGE, NEVER INSTALL CORTANA, and most certainly never install any updates automatically.
- Eighth line of defense: Block all updates.
- Fifth line of defense: Remind yourself that the tinfoil tricks + win7 is still a better OS and life choice than SpyDows 10.

>>338508679
Too me it is, I've never been able to get rid of it despite googling. Then again I've always amd cards

>>338508710
I never said that it's okay having built in adverts, but you can get rid of the annoyances and the TRY MICROSOFT OFFICE PRODUCTS FOR FREE pop ups and you forget about it.

>>338508826
nigga are you using edge? lol
>>
>>338509548
thats the thing... you cant turn off the updates
>>
>>338509541
This is the very reason you should disconnect peripherals when not using your computer.
Especially the microphones and cameras.
>>
>>338509348
So I guess this applies to win 7/8 because of IE, right ?
>>
>>338509528
No that is windows edge not being programed well.

What next your going to say internet explorer wasn't terrible?
>>
>>338508826
I just did the same thing and it did not do it. Seems like a gpu related problem.

>My convenience is worth more time than trying out linux and having to fuck around with drivers,
My laptop tablet convertible worked out of the box with linux mint. The multi touch and wacom pen inputs.
>>
>>338509608
I do not want my operating system reporting everything I do to an unscrupulous major corporation with info-dumping ties to the government

I don't give a fuck what that does to the potential future versions of Windows
>>
>>338509762
Yet at the same time, I just opened up edge and did basically the same thing as that anon and I didn't have such a horrible lag. I'm pretty sure that has more to do with his CPU and GPU than with the program itself.

Where is the built-in advertisements? I have windows 10 on a computer and I don't see shit.

If you are talking about the start menu you can actually customize that if you try right clicking.

Not defending window 10 by any means but I seriously don't see any ads and if that what you guys were talking about then to be blunt you guys don't know shit.
>>
>>338509737
It applies to every single windows OS actually. Windows is just shit. Move onto linux or react os.
>>
>>338509694
Fucking around with drivers really isn't needed. They're packages in all the big distros, easy to install. If you're talking about the quality of drivers for your amd card though, yeah they're shit.
Tearing shouldn't be a thing on any distro with a properly configured compositor (Ubuntu for example). If you have tearing I only know how to force it for nvidia and intel cards, but it's still a very easy fix by installing a compositor like compton and copying a config file.

I'm sure gentoo and linux from scratch are VERY profitable
>>
>>338509731
Or you could use an OS that doesn't report everything you do back to the home server.

Also one of my favorite privacy-supporting functions was on a computer I had which had a hardware disconnect switch for the Wi-Fi router. You could physically disconnect the power supply to the WiFi card by flipping that switch whenever you weren't using the internet.
>>
>>338510042
Assuming you didn't already disable most of that shit on install of win10, you should see some adverts when using the start menu's search function.
>>
>>338509941

By "info-dumping ties to the government" do you mean "currently engaged in a very expensive court battle for which the purpose is to protect their customer's data from the government"?

KB3035583 is the get windows 10 app that gets installed on win 8.1 and 7. You can uninstall and hide it.
KB3069708 Telemetry for 8.1 and 7

Both can be uninstalled and are also labeled for customer experience improvements
Learn how to do some research before updating to the next OS.

I believe i was clear on where i stand about win10 and to never fucking ever ever use it, even in neverland i wouldn't ever use Windows.

^ This post was written with reinforcing in mind written, not logic. Two negatives don't make a positive in this one. This sentence and logic works outside the classical logic system, as advised by the previous few sentences.

Actually that's Apple, weirdly enough

Microsoft were the ones outed as part of PRISM, I may use their software but I will never TRUST them again. Any software functionality with the mere POTENTIAL to be exploited as an info-gathering tool I assume, on-face, IS being used to spy on behalf of the government.

I will retain that belief until my dying day.

thank god i am a pirate and haven't updated ever in my life if it weren't for compatibility i wouldn't even have upgraded to win7
