Not only graphics but its not very playable cause of archaism. Shit controls, slow as fuck, and weapons are total garbage. Its very hard and i cant count how many times i died at start of game. Its not just difficult, its difficult because its old and shit

IV has aged the worst, it feels even more outdated than the PS2 games. The graphics are dark/grey as fuck, it treats being on the internet as some super new thing (despite the fact it was 2008), and the driving was a failed experiment.

No, it was just an older game. Bully is almost as old and they also follow suit of not allowing you to retry last mission. Of course in Bully if you miss a job, you just have to move on since the in game clock runs like an hour every minute.

>>338504569
Let me be frank. I don't want to have to drive for 10+ minutes driving from the hospital to find the right vehicle and get back all the weapons and body armor I lost to try again a mission that will take a dozen tries to beat.
The reason I haven't picked the game back up is because of the mission where you must rescue Lance from that junkyard warehouse and escort him out. That mission irritates me to no end because if I don't die Lance does, or my car explodes and I cannot make it out. The enemies are everywhere and taking them out does nothing when waves of more of them come later and you rake more damage before even getting to the damn warehouse.

Why do PC games always age worse than console games?
>>
>>338511979
Are you retarded
GTA was always console series
>>
Video games can not age
Movie can not age
Books can not age

Media does not age. Media can not become "dated." Media does not become altered through the passing of time.

Terms like "aged" and "dated" are simply terms used by people who have been conditioned by a post-2006 industry into being casual retards.

If a game was good when it came out. It's a good game forever. It's the exact same game. Nothing changed. And if you try comparing that game to a game that came out AFTER, then that's YOUR fault, not the games, for being retarded.

When you criticize media, you compare it to other forms of media that came out at the same time, or before. NOT after. That's retarded. It's not the game being "dated," it's you being stupid and not knowing how to criticize media.
>>
>>338512343
Preach it
>>
Most 3D games aged pretty poorly

Notable exceptions are things like Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, where the artstyle carries the entire game and it basically looks perfect for that kind of aesthetic even with the more 'primitive' N64 graphics

I also wouldn't say most SNES games look dated, probably again because of the art direction even though the graphics for some of the games I loved as a kid are like 25 years old now

Generally, the more photorealistic a game tries to be, the worse it ages

No, this logic is very narrow-minded.

If in 1995 a game comes out with a new FPS control scheme then this innovation makes the game good at the time. Then in 2000 when a new FPS comes out with a much more refined and more sensical, then going back to the game in 1995 isn't as fun because while it was innovative at the time, we now see the many flaws of the game that were overlooked.

A shitty analogy would be building a new recipe. You have some chicken and then figure out that putting some pepper on it makes it taste pretty good. People love it and eat it up. Then later on, someone says "hey this tastes good if you bread it and fry it and then add pepper". People eat that shit up too, but that old recipe for chicken with only pepper is now bland compared to the new recipe and you see that it could have tasted better. Video games build upon one another, and the games that relied on innovation especially age the worst. Sometimes there are games that were innovative and aged perfectly fine. Some games weren't innovative and aged like ass. But aging is a thing in gaming.

You're pretty fair here except for this here:
>Terms like "aged" and "dated" are simply terms used by people who have been conditioned by a post-2006 industry into being casual retards.
There's nothing casual or retarded by using "dated" or "aged" as terms. When you use them you compare them to newer media and what you're used to. Old movies can still hold up but vidya are harder because it's a newer media but also so many factors come into play determining your personal enjoyment. A movie doesn't have the same job as a videogame do, so comparing them is quite unfair.

Only for retards holding it up to unrealistic and literally impossible standards.

The world looked excellent you faggot. The only thing that held Morrowind severely back was the animations and character models.
>>
>>338505336

I pick it up every few years and it's worse every time. I put about 30 hours into it in the past couple months and while it's got some admirable qualities people are way too defensive about it's numerous and significant flaws. It's not much better than Oblivion or Skyrim and there's a case to be made that it's worse than either.

There's only a few races worth playing, and only two star signs worth using. Half the skills in the game are completely worthless or functionally pointless. Magic is impossible to level without buying training, but completely OP when you commit to it.

People argue that the quests are better and deeper, but fuck no they aren't. The flavor text is better and the lack of fast travel/compass pads their length, but most actual quest content is literally no different than Skyrim or Oblivion.

It's not a bad game but almost everything wrong with Oblivion and Skyrim is also a problem in Morrowind, and Morrowind has a bunch of unique problems that the sequels solved.

But if our later opinions and criteria don't matter to judge the game, why do the opinions and criteria of when it came out matter? Tastes evolve, this is true for all media. It is true for humor. Some products/performances stand the test of time. In other words, they survive the evolving tastes, and are therefore more universally good. Others don't, they may have been perceived as great but, and for all intents and purposes were great, but on second/third thought, are flawed in some sense that wasn't obvious at the time.

>What about safe spaces or whatever they're called
By your own admission you're not even familiar with "safe spaces" and have only heard of them on the internet. Let me explain free speech to you, since you're obviously a fucking retard.
Free speech means the GOVERNMENT, can't persecute you for anything you say. This is not the case in most Europoor countries where hate speech is a legitimate crime. A private institution, something Europeans may have a passing familiarity with, is well within their right to ban certain types of speech on THEIR property. They do not, however, have the power to pursue legal actions against a perpetrator of perceived hate speech, as the victim is protected under the first amendment.
Take Facebook/Twitter for example. They often get criticized for censorship, but they're private companies who give people platforms on which to speak. They're well within their right to take those platforms away and this does not imply a police state.
>>
>>338498284

As a semi-dudebro gamer, I liked it.

Played it for the first time a couple of months ago. It was great for the most part, and the jagged polygon npcs actually looked sort of unnerving. There's an option which remaps the key bindings to that of your everyday shooter, so that isn't much of a problem either. My only real complaint is the shit soundtrack, the body of the many segment and the fact that there's no reloading animation.

Anyone know any other games in this vein? I have a massive hardon for rpg/fps hybrids, and I've already played all the shock games.
>>
>>338515036
You completely missed the point. If in 1995 a game came out using a control scheme for a FPS that was innovative because it brought FPS to console, and then in 2000 a FPS is released that makes FPS more fluid on a controller, then going back to the 1995 game is like pulling out teeth dealing with what is now a terrible control scheme for a FPS. You overlooked the terrible graphics and poor multiplayer execution because it was the only game of its kind at the time. Now in the future, there are games that are all around better because they built upon the older games and could polish the game in other areas as well.

I could go back and replay my Super Play Action Football on the SNES but the only fun aspect will be the nostalgia and putting up with the terrible control scheme. Shit was fun as hell when I was younger and I could play forever but today it is bland. Super Smash Bros 64 was fun as fuck but Melee did everything it did better. Now Smash Bros 64 isn't a game I want to play or go back to unless it's for nostalgia sake. It hasn't aged as well. That is the point.
>>
>>338515226
This.

The "games can't age" argument comes from butthurt over anons' precious nostalgia being threatened by even-handed criticism. "Aging" may be shoddy terminology but the point is not everything stands the test of time.
>>
>>338516364
To have aged bad, the game had to have been good in the first place.
>>
>>338512343
I have hard time reading older books because the vocabulary they use is so different from what I'm used to. So you can easily say that the age of the book is showing.

In similar way you come to expect certain things from movies and games and when try something older and they aren't there, the age shows.

This is actually true. Americans go on about our "democracy" when we actually don't live in a democracy. We live in a republic. And the whole freedom thing is a commonplace force fed to us since grade-school while simultaneously demonizing the Nazis and the Soviets for doing the exact same thing to create a popular conception of the nation. I would be hilarious if I wasn't actually living it.

But I do still love my guns.

People always compare everything that they consume to other similar things: if you watch a movie, you compare it to other movies of the same genre, if you eat something, you are bound to compre it to other similar things you have eaten.

So why vidya would be a special case where everything exists in a void, distanced from all your other experiences?

Evolving tastes is a fallacy in and of itself. Tastes don't evolve, they change as society changes with it, sometimes even going back to being the same as they were a decades ago (see Retro bullshit). That's why art should be seen as it was on the time it came to be, and it's impact measured as how many generations can still be affected by it.

That said, video games aren't art, so I completely agree with you. Design can always be improved, made better, more reliable, sleek, pretty, whatever. Video games have always been and always will be a design work. If you look at a well constructed bridge and feel a tickle in your buttock, you can say that it is art, but it doesn't change the fact that it was the product of a well studied design, with a very obvious meaning behind it; to bridge two gaps.

The term aging is stupid though.

I actually thought VC was the worst of the three of them because of the gameplay. Specifically the driving gameplay.

The roads fucked around too much with too many random pointless turns. You never felt like you could really pick up speed. I suspect this was because they wanted to make the map feel bigger than it was, but it still was irritating.

Driving through LC in III really made you feel like you were engaging in mayhem.

The map was horribly small even for the time, Tommy was a fucking moron who they tried to ham fist into being an Italian version of theatrical Scarface from the 80's when they literally could have gone more realistic and made him into Al Capone in the 80's which is not what the movies (not the original or the remake) really tried to do. The rest of the characters were boring as fuck. The sound track was only the best if you're a fucking hipster waxing poetic about the 80's which in truth was so fucking shitty, people who actually grew up during that time look back in disgust and the ones who don't probably actually like hair metal or synth pop.

GTA SA was, is and probably will continue to be the best game in the series. It was a perfect culmination of mechanics that were being built up from GTA 3 and it did all of them very well.
