Dynasty Warriors is a good gateway into getting into the books and the real history behind the characters; I mean it was mainly because of Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors that I took an interest in the Sengoku and Three Kingdoms periods to begin with.
But with that said, now that I've consumed far superior media on both periods, both game series leave me feeling a bit dissatisfied (at least story wise). I mean no matter how you look at it, the games are basically really simplified anime versions of real events and historical fiction books. It becomes even more apparent just how lacking the stories in the games are and how many events are left out when you watch the excellent Three Kingdoms series.
In fact, if you still want to experience the history in video game form, then I would recommend either the Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Nobunaga's Ambition strategy games instead. As they have less of an anime influence and the events are played with more seriousness.
Now I'm not trashing the musou games, I still enjoy playing them for being the over the top East Asian genocide simulators that they are and I'm still really grateful to Koei for getting me interested in a history that I knew very little about.
tldr: the musou games are a fun easy way to get into the history/fiction, but you'll probably crave something more in depth eventually.

I still like playing as Shu because they're the underdogs and their stages are the most exciting. Think about it, Dynasty Warriors is romanticized version of a romanticized version of a romanticized version of 'based on true events' version of history. The problem with this is that there will ALWAYS be an adviser who suggests doing something else, so whenever there's a setback there is always someone to say "I told you so."
Certainly there were many other esteemed and senior advisers other than Jia Xu in favor of quick action, especially considering that Shu and Wu had turned against each other at that time.
The difference comes in how leaders treat dissenting advisers. When Cao Cao attacked the Wuhuan, many of his advisers disapproved and said it was too risky. Cao Cao went ahead anyways. When he returned victorious, he had the names of all the advisers who had composed the campaign compiled into a list. Everyone was afraid.
Cao Cao then distributed rewards to everyone on that list. Roughly paraphrasing, he said: "I took a great risk for a great reward, but that was not the proper way to do things. You instead offered a more safe plan. That is why I give rewards. In the future do not hesitate to speak up again."

One problem I have with the series in general was how things got a little more wacky after DW6. Never as wacky as DW6, but the designs felt more grounded in say, DW5.
