In the old comic canon, before the Pendering, Amy looked like her CD self at first. Then she found some magic wish granting thing and used it to become ten years older so not only will Sonic notice her but she can be a freedom fighter, before hand she was considered too young. When she does this everyone apparently sees it as a good thing even though the magic wish granting thing could have cured the King's fetal disease or just make it where Robotnik never existed in the first place. The people making the comics at the time were total hacks if you couldn't tell.

I got no idea why generations didn't do so well though. Unleashed did well because the day stages were fucking GREAT and it was the best mainline sonic game in years, it was a return to form. It tarnished the reputation so generations didn't do as well because people were stung by unleashed.
