TOMORROW.
For those who don't pay attention to Terraria updates anymore because people constantly think the most recent update is the last update, the 1.3.1 update is focused around expanding the mechanical/engineering portion of Terraria (which has been lacking for a very long time), and has less on the sheer quantity of content end. That said, this update will make adventure maps much deeper, mechanically speaking, and allow the player to do more with building.

Also added in the update is full controller support, to bring over the shitters who insist on playing on consoles and handhelds and phones that are missing out on a tonne of content and features.

As always, the update is free.

Pedguin is currently streaming a new adventure map designed with the new mechanics, if anyone is curious.

What the hell I thought the moon update was supposed to be the last one

This is cool
>>
>>338403174
Nope. 1.3.2, a content-focused update is also already in the asset development stage.

Nice. They should keep going until they get to space just to take a heaping shit on a certain other game. How far they planning on expanding the engineering stuff?
>>
it's weird that they are continuing to update this considering Otherworld has been announced?

cool though, i guess
>>
There's a stream going on right now of an adventure map some devs built for the update.

There's a new companion cube pet in the update. Also mounted portal guns, player sensors, shittons of new monster statues, conveyor belts, and pressure plates that detect projectiles.
>>
>>338403880
Terraria 2 has been announced too, hasn't it?

So far they've added:
>Logic gates
>Ability to rotate traps to face other directions (so sideways spear and spiky traps, or vertical flame traps)
>Conveyor belts
>Projectile-sensitive pressure plates
>An accessory that can place actuators as you place blocks
>A tool that can activate actuators without needing a wire signal (so fucking amazing for any builders that use actuated blocks for a foreground/background effect)
>Stationary portal guns (like you'd see in early Portal puzzles)
>Gem Switches (which send signal pulses when giant gems are placed inside or taken away)
>Blocks that can allow wires of the same colour to cross without connecting
>A fourth wire colour,
>Even more mob-spawning statues

I'm expecting some balance tweaks as well (as per usual), and maybe a few new blocks aside from the engineering ones. There's at least one new pet also, I think.

Unfortunately, the game's coding and engine are too spaghetti and too limited to do all that much more with the game, content-wise and mechanically. For instance, they only have enough room for one more liquid type. We'll have to wait for Otherworld or Terraria 2.

>>338403880
Otherworld is done in cooperation with third party developers and is considered a spin-off, although Red did move from the Terraria 1 team to the Otherworld team to help out. The rest of the team will be continuing for as long as they can until Red decides to start developing Terraria 2.

The team has commented on the viability of a mod support update and said that any update which includes mod support would probably be Terraria's last update.

>>338404067
>player sensors
You mean side from pressure plates? Neat.
>>
>>338404317
They are working on it, but there's nothing released about it.
>>
>>338404429
>Mechanics involving item presence
>More traps
>Wall sockets for large gemstones
This I like. This I really like. May also warrant getting into Terraria custom maps.
And another Playthrough.
Shame they are releasing it the day before Overwatch drops.
>>
>>338404317
>>338404513
I believe Red did some incredibly basic framework for Terraria 2 before getting back on to start developing Terraria 1.2, and a little more when he was starting to phase himself out of 1.3 development before he said fuck it and went full in on 1.3 before finally stepping off and letting the rest of the team handle Terraria so he could work on Otherworld with Engine.
>>
>>338404778
Otherworld probably isn't gonna be too good. It reminds me a bit of Starbound.
>>
Somebody sell me on this game. Every time I see gameplay of it, it just doesn't look terribly interesting. It seems to have a lot of content, though, so I don't know if I'm missing something or not.
>>
>>338404884
You build stuff, explore, and kill bosses.
>>
Chances are, Terraria will receive updates long after even Terraria 2 is dead and gone, mark my words.
>>
>>338404987
So, sort of like Minecraft, then. I see. Is the Vita version getting this update?
>>
>>338404867
It makes me think of Starbound, but way more down-to-earth and grounded in reality.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydX8dISSwqc

>>338404884
Think Minecraft, but without a limitless world.

Now, think Minecraft while being able to see through your surroundings if you've explored them.

Now, think Minecraft with actual combat. Not particularly amazing combat, mind you, but you know, there's a progression and there's variety and surprises.

Now, think Minecraft with ACTUAL PROGRESSION. Not simply tier-based, but exploration and effort-based. And not only actual progression, but a lot of optional and side-progression.

Now, think Minecraft where each update wasn't bare-assed minimal changes shit that barely do anything at all aside from giving you a new colour of wood and dirt to gather.

The game offers a lot of flexibility and replayability. It's... not exactly 10/10, but for the kind of game it is, I'd easily give it a 8.5-9/10 within the limitations of what kind of game it is.

Like, it started off a shitty Minecraft clone and has grown to be quite a bit more than that, for free, plus it costs like 10bucks and regularly goes on sale for 5 bucks or even 2.5 bucks.
>>
>>338405296
It's basically a combat-oriented 2-D Minecraft with a huge variety of content and shit to do, also no, I don't think so. PC version is $10 and constantly on sale, just grab that, the game is not demanding.
>>
anyone else pretty hype for otherworld just because its more terraria?
>>
>>338405296
Not yet. All non-PC ports are handled by other companies. They have a small handful of unique content but never anything that really compares with the PC version, also they tend to have bugs that don't get patched for months if not years and are so many versions behind that you'd be waiting a year or two just to get in line with the PC. Also the controls are unbearable.
>>
>>338404884
Pros
>Your character build is able to be customized to the absolute maximum.
>Ridiculous amount of content.
>Co-Op makes the game even more fun
>The game still gets content even though the devs have no reason to even develop the game anymore
>Combat is well designed

Cons
>Building in the game kind of sucks
>Unless you pick a small world, expect to dig for 2 hours and only find 1-2 things that actually matter
>Character creation is pointless for 99% of the time
>If you don't use KBM, don't even buy it
>>
>>338405493
Oh yeah, definitely. While it looks a lot like Starbound visually, they've definitely gone into it with a lot more realistic expectations and an actual plan. I like the idea of RPG-style character growth based on item usage, and of more coherent NPC-based quests, and of cleansing the world of corruption actually being a meaningful goal, and of actually needing to defend some things.

>>
>>338405768
Controller support is being added in 1.3.1, tomorrow, so I dunno how long that last con will hold up.

Character creation works well with me because I like to put on vanity stuff that looks nice, which is something you can actually do because it doesn't affect your stats.

The pros and cons of world sizes really change depending on what you're looking for out of them. For me personally, I like to take a really, really slow approach to progression, and I like to play the long game, which means that anything smaller than a large world feels cramped towards the end of the game. Small worlds are only good for quick resource gathering.

>building in the game kind of sucks
Fuck you, man.
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B5VFAiJ5n4-SNzEwaWhUWlZzN28&usp=sh

Building in the early game is kind of a pain. One of the things I appreciate is that your building capabilities grow and expand as the game progresses.
>>
>>338406210
>Controller support is being added in 1.3.1, tomorrow, so I dunno how long that last con will hold up.
I meant that you shouldn't play with a controller even if you had the option.

>Character creation works well with me because I like to put on vanity stuff that looks nice, which is something you can actually do because it doesn't affect your stats
I was talking about when you first create your character and choose colors.

>Building in the early game is kind of a pain. One of the things I appreciate is that your building capabilities grow and expand as the game progresses.
I was more talking about how unintuitive and wonky building feels. You can make some cool shit, but it doesn't feel right when I try to build.
>>
>>338406812
Use a brick layer accessory, then, to increase block placement speed and range? Use an extendo-grip to help you reach even further? Use a building potion to do both on top of those? Use the Smart Cursor to place walls and to remove them?

Dunno man it feels good to me. My primary issue is that I suck shit at making anything look good without ripping off other peoples' ideas.

It's worth noting that the PC controller support isn't just a simple port of the ports' controller schemes, but has some new features specific to the PC and is fairly customizable.
>>
Oh there's new stuff?

Last I played was when the Moon Lord (or whatever it was called) was the final boss and people were cheesing him with lava thrones. I thought it was supposed to be the end.

A lot more new stuff?
>>
>>338407567
This one's mostly a mechanical update for engineering, although it'll add a shit tonne of options for custom map makers and for base design and defences.

1.3.2 will be the "a lot of new stuff" update.
>>
>>338403396

Source for this?
>>
>>338408176
I'm having a little difficulty finding the exact post, but one of the team mentioned that Lazure (the sprite artist) is already starting work on 1.3.2 at some point, and we know that 1.3.2 is going to be a thing that exists and will be driven more by content than mechanics unlike 1.3.1, because Cenx herself directly mentions 1.3.2 and beyond on several occasions, including this post about the state of 1.3.1.

http://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/the-state-of-1-3-1-for-pc.42306/

I'll keep looking for the exact post, though.

I felt the same way so I pirated it. Ended up putting in nearly 200 hours just building and exploring before even hitting hardmode. Bought the game and have put in another 300 hours, it's a really great game and worth the money for the ridiculous amount of content and replayability. Pic related my witchdoctor house on one of my old worlds.
>>
>>338408725
I pirated and bought the game when it first came out.

Making new characters and new worlds with each new patch has resulted in nearly 2800 cumulative hours in this game.

Help.
>>
>>338408642
Can't seem to find it, despite looking through Cenx, Loki, and Yoraiz0r's post history.

Shiet. Guess that claim falls flat on its head, but honestly it's not that unlikely, given that 1.3.1 was mostly a mechanical update and Lazure wouldn't have had too much in the way of spriting to do.

Thorium's a fairly large content-driven one, but it's one of those ones where pretty much everything yields something you can use to make shit, so everything else feels a little less special.

The tweak / balance mods look nice.

The mod scene for terraria died with the 1.3 update.
The only mod which adds new content and isn't made by some 12 years old who writes a 90000 characters post with his ideas and things and makes a mod who adds a single block "i'll do the other stuff next, i promise :^)" is the Thorium mod.

Sure, until the Blood Moon hits and everything turns red and you've got literal mushy blood abominations with eyes and mouths all over swarming your home trying to tear out your anus through your mouth, bunnies, penguins, and goldfish turn evil and try to nibble your feet off, and all your female NPCs start getting real pissy.

Building in Minecraft is exceptionally cozy, actually.
>Put on some nice, smooth music
>Clear out an area and torch it up
>Carve out land if necessary
>Grab building materials from chests planted centrally
>Go wild
>Tailor it as you go for the aesthetic
>Keep working on it until it's done
>Step back and look at your work, realize it's shit and start over
Quite enjoyable.
Terraria is mostly the same, except
>Stop to deal with some monster every 20 seconds and you can see the whole thing/most of it if fuckhueg at once
>>
>>338414492
>>338414803
I find building unfun and unrewarding. I have no motivation to build at all. And I'd like to have acces to some kind of "hub" in Terraria so i don't have to make base and houses every world.
>>
>>338415465
>"hub"
Just make a big box and have the "housing" area be made almost entirely of wooden planks. You can pack NPCs really tightly together like that.
Really easy to build and can be done quickly.
