When will the open world meme end?

Will the inevitable No Man's Sky flop make people realize nobody likes massive worlds with nothing in them?

It's an alpha. Probably for testing purposes. It also shows that the game supports enormous maps if developed in the future.

What game.
Open world makes sense for games like arma and this, it is a must for a decent combined arms game.
Small maps have been done so much in realistic games it's limiting and boring.
The most optimal attack positions in shit like RO are on a wiki, whereas in open world you have to learn to read a map and plan this shit out dynamically on a large scale.

Open world lets you do shit in military games that small map shooters don't. RO now and RO on an australia sized map would be two different games.

Manouvres are massive and encompass tens if not hundreds of kilometers.
I would kill for an open world combined arms game with supplies and logistics systems.

Xenoblade X is literally the ONLY open world game done right in the history of video games.

It's not like there's some big secret to it either, it's just the simple matter of MAKING THE WORLD ACTUALLY INTERESTING TO EXPLORE AND NOT MADE OF COPYPASTE.

This. I'd have prefered a better/an actual story than what we got sure, but I would not have traded anything I could explore/loot/fight in that open world for anything.

A better balance has to be struck between the activities/story and the scope of the world, that's all.

7th gen garbage consoles had 512mb of shared ram between the CPU and GPU. Most games could not handle more than ~7 enemies at once largely due to this limitation of temporary storage of assets.

See: Dragon Age 2 and how you fought groups of 50 enemies in waves of 6.

Some do (MGSV and likely NMS are the best examples), but most generic open worlds now have the exact opposite problem.

Look at any Ubisoft open world game and you have a map FILLED with complete tedious bullshit and useless collectibles.

Very few games find the medium between empty barren wastelands and checklist overload.

I played MGSV after Xenoblade X and I found it to be a massive boring chore to "explore". Literally nothing but copypasted environments and guard posts, with the occasional well-designed area for story missions. Not to mention Snake can barely climb over an ankle height rock and dies from a 5 meter drop, ensuring that verticality - the most important factor in making a game world fun to explore - is completely absent. You can't even swim for fucks sake!

>Meanwhile in Xenoblade
>>
>>338400575
The problem is it's a regular JRPG. And not even a particularly hard or autistic JRPG that demands min-maxing a thousand different stats and combat gimmicks.

>>
>>338401742
Because somewhat realistic military simulators like Arma are extremely boring. In the actual military you have the prospect of actually dying to spice things up.

I guess if you made a suicide accessory, like a captive bolt gun attached to your head that triggered when your avatar died, then a milsim wouldn't be boring.
>>

By all means anon, tell me where I can go to fight ancient evils, engage in epic sword duels to the death, ride giant robots or build an empire and wage war against my enemies.

People who play video games that simulate things you can do in real life are indeed retarded. But that's not most good video games.

>tfw hated the GTA series for starting this bullshit open world meme
>hated AssCreed for being the cancer killing modern videogame design
>finally vindicated because people are getting sick of empty open worlds where developers spent 90% of the dev time making an "immersive" massive world, rather than any actually fun gameplay.

Open world has some good series and ruined them. Arkham Asylum was amazing, then the series had to go open world and we got Arkham Batmobile as a result. Lords of Shadow was a remarkable Castlevania reboot that had a ton of promise. Then its sequel went open world and killed the reboot, the series, and Konami altogether.

Open World is the enemy.
