As someone that loved Fallout 3 and NV, hated Fallout 4 and just started playing Witcher 3 I can say that the Witcher 3 is like Skrim and RDR had a baby. It's like Skyrim with writing.

If you just started, here is a little free tip for you.
DISABLE THE FUCKING UNDISCOVERED LOCATION MARKS once you leave White Orchard.
Seriously: open up your map, go to "filters" (default by pressing F), look up the marker for "undiscovered location" (the question mark) and filter it out. Alternatively, I think they can be disabled in options menu too.
Seriously, removing the fucking ? things from all over the map makes the game not feel like a stupid AC collect-a-thon. Discovering random events and locations and treasures will feel ALL that much more natural, you will be forced to pay more attention to the landscape itself than the map, and you will also not burn out on loot so fast.
Seriously, this is a big, game changing thing, it's like removing the goal markers in Dishonored, even more. Filtering out the undiscovered locations, the game gets a whole LOT better.

TW3 can hardly be finished under 80 hours, and with a bit of faffing about with side quests, gears and explorations it easily climbs up to 120 on single play through vanilla. It's a long fucking game.

I'll do a quest, and I'll run/walk everywhere. I don't use my horse ever, partly because the horse AI sucks ass, but it's also so much more fun to go by foot. On my way to my objective I stumble on a location, end up exploring it, start a quest that carries me all over the map, all while straying off an exploring more locations, and it never ends. Shits fantastic. I mean, I've been playing this game for a year apparently (according to the gog achievements, I met yennefer 5 months ago) and I JUST now got to kaer morhen. This is the longest I've ever played a game without ever feeling burnt out.

I actually learned to love Roche eventually. The updates really improved the A.I., and I downloaded a no-center-on-camera mod. I love to just let Roche go on autopilot and look around the landscape when I travel from place to place. That said, when I go off roads, I always walk. It's fun to see how most of the PoI locations do make sense, can be anticipated, and there is frequently some sort of micro-story told by the environment around them. A LOT of work went into them, only to be completely ruined by the STUPID decision to just mark them on map by default and take all exploration and landscape reading out of the equation.

yeah I completely agree. It's so fucking hard to imagine that they were able to accomplish this level of detail. It blows everything thing else out of the water.
Also another thing I did was disable the subtitles. It was a lot more immersive to just watch the scenes and really listen to them, rather than read some text. Although, it's really hard to understand some people because of the thick accents or if they're a troll. But it still adds a lot to the cutscenes where you really have to pay attention. I understand if you leave them on though.

This is objectively wrong. Your character is pre-determined, you can just pick the gender and looks.
There is no morality in the game, almost all dialogue "choices" have the same outcome, your other choices in the game matter very little in the game/story, only real choice you have is the ending and even there it's only really one out of 2 with different shades.
In Witcher 3 your choices actually matter, there's 3 different main endings with dozens of different political (war outcome) and character endings.
I enjoyed my first Fallout 4 playthrough, but I have literally no desire to ever touch the game again, not even really interested in the DLC (first two were mod-tier bullshit anyway). In hindsight I can't even say why I enjoyed the game, it feels shallow and bland when I look at it.
Witcher 3 on the other hand is a game I will replay again and again, though sadly my time won't allow me to play it as much as I would want to. And I'm hyped af for the new expansion.

Fallout 4 has exactly the same problem of RPG elements being reduced to flavors of killing things. At least in Witcher, you are presented with interesting quest choices with interesting and varied outcomes that often resonate quite far into the game.
