A reboot would probably be the best thing for it. The roster is lopsided and bloated with completely forgettable characters and most of the existing movesets are poorly thought out and need a change.
I'd be happy if they cut the wheat from the chaff from the current roster, put thought and effort into veteran movesets, revamped the custom move system so it was actually fucking something, and added a few good newcomers.

People seem to forget there's a fair number of Wii U-based characters they could add in a Smash NX. Throw in Inkling, Elma, Wonder-Red, and Shovel Knight, for example.

I pretty much agree. A reboot really would be the best way to go at this point. You're not going to be able to please everyone, there's no way Smash 4's entire roster is going to be survive to the next game, too many roadblocks, too many obstacles, practically impossible to top it either.
I say just pull the plug, go back to the basics, start with what worked and redo it. Either that or Smash NX port with four or five big/requested names to turn heads.

Cutting down the roster size would be better. Characters felt pretty distinct in melee, barring clones, but in 4 everything feels so homogenized. A lot of the characters have several moves that can fit into a specific category where that move has a certain function with just slightly altered parameters depending on the character. I'd rather the roster size be smaller with each character having a unique and varied style.
