Shantae is ok
DSi game isn't bad, it's very mediocre
3ds is the best one but the WiiU is shaping up to replace it

I really wanted to get into this but the core gameplay is just not fun.

At the start of the game Shantae is just okay to play as. But once you get a bunch of upgrades it's a fucking blast. I'd say that's the biggest problem with the game, getting more powerups sooner would have made the game more fun as a whole I think.

Still, by the end of the game you're a powerhouse and if you even sort of know what you're doing you can clear just about any screen in seconds. Which feels even better because of the buildup to that point, which is what I think they were going for with the slower start.

Shantae 1 is full of fake difficulty because the bottomless pits aren't marked with tiny skulls and you have to do some leaps of faith. It's also harder if you are into that
Risky's Revenge is SUPER boring. Only has 2 dungeons, bunch of backtracking to do boring chores like delivering a puppy.
For that matter, Pirate's Curse has quick to use items while in the other games you have to dance to use your abilities.
Pirate's Curse is much much better than its predecesors.

Idk when the main attack in the game is lame as fuck is just turns me off the game. I know you can get magic attacks and shit, I played through like 2/3rds of the game and gave up.

That's an understandable reason to drop a game.

I've only played Pirate's Curse and honestly the hairwhip in it feels a lot like the whip from Castlevania 1. You also get multiple new attacks throughout this one which I'm not sure if the other games had. Not magic stuff, but like a gun and a downward aerial thrust and stuff like that, that you can use any time.

Is Shantae still popular on /v/ by the way? I first found out about this series from here and the people here seemed to love it. But I haven't really been on /v/ for like, two years or so. I'm just kind of surprised a Shantae thread hasn't gotten more attention.

Or did people here always just love it for the porn?
