Read the tuitorial log.
You click one to attack, then you can connect multiple attacks in a row. You need to practice to get the timing connect the attack, on medium and easy you get a helper, which is when the sword icon is glowing.
You can connect attacks on different enemies, so you can start a chain on one enemy, then move on to the next one.
You can double tap direction keys to pirrouete , pirrouete doesn't break the chain attack but it also doesn't guarantee a dodge, just increses the chances of dodge .
Use pirrouete to move around enemies to make a great chain attack.
As you level up you unlock new attacks in the chian which have different timing, but with practive you get the animations and time the attacks right.

Many of the animations (particularly for silver sword, especially for higher levels of combo) are obviously made up but a lot of the animations are actually based on some German longsword treatise (Liechtenauer?). I started playing The Witcher series after 3 came out. I messed around in 3 a bit, liked it enough to spend some time trying to figure out who the fuck everyone was, so loaded up the first game.
It was really rough around the edges, you ran way too fucking slow, a lot of it was terrible, but sure enough I kept playing. Found myself really having a lot of fun, even if there was horseshit here and there, I looked forward to playing it when I was at work.
Finished up the first game, started reading the first book, and got ready to throw myself into the second one.
Hoooooo boy. I was immediately turned off from the awful UI. Two giant steps way fucking back. Combat was somehow worse then the first one. QTEs? What the fuck? Potions last like 10 minutes and you can't use them in combat? Plus it is just so dreadfully boring.
I'm in act two I guess, just made it to the other side of the giant cursed battlefield... and I haven't played in like two weeks. After burning through the first one, I'm not sure I have the willpower to go back to the second.
I'm considering just skipping the rest, but I want to know how everything with Letho turns out, and all the rest of the shit before 3.

Roche is a more interesting character but Iorveth's path is ways more fun. Roche's path has a lot of good writing but the entire thing is fucking miserable and the camp fucking sucks. While Vergen is more fun it has a lot of cringeworthy shit writing wise.
If you really don't want play the game you don't have to. Just watch the major cutscenes on youtube. The ending decision is my favorite part of the game. But you have to experience the whole game to really get it.
Just switch to easy or use a mod (like me) that gives way more XP so you can max out the entire skill tree and that makes the game a lot easier.

Funny you say that. I played this game for the first time back when Dragon Age Origins was all the hype and I couldn't get into it at all. I never finished the tutorial part.
Flash forward a couple years later it goes on sale for 1 euro on Steam and I just grabbed it cause why not? Then I took time to actually learn the combat and the stances and it's been a blast. I later learned that you could completely cheese the game by maxing out Igni and just raining down fire on everything and that's how I finished the game.
The main draw of the game is the story, the characters and the fact that your decisions actually change stuff. It's nothing major like in Witcher 2 where you got two different acts in the middle based on your choices in the first act but it's still something. I think you also need some affinity for old school WRPGs since this is basically it just with a small variation in combat. Instead of click once and then wait, you click multiple times at right intervals to get sick combos. I really don't see why all the hate for the game yet shit like Dragon Age gets free pass even though at the core the games are basically the same.

I've read a few pages of non fan translation made by professional and I read one in russian and polish it's like two different books.
My guess will be probably any slav language translation is decent, then german(they have enough similar concept left in language), then everything else from europe and only after that english. No idea how asian/turk languages will work with source.

The whole game is around 20-30 hours at max on a single play through. If you are in chapter 2, you are already half-way through the game.

Actually, The Witcher is not nearly as popular in english speaking countries as it is in slavic or roman speaking ones. It is the least popular translation of them all.
Also, I guess english does not lend itself very well to translation from slavic languages. Or at least it takes a whole lot more effort to do it well. I've read multiple english translations of russian classics and they were incomparably worse than the translation in my native language. Pathologic was never translated well into English either. A brilliant Czech book called "The War with the Newt's" was also tragically translated into english, and they had to issue a retranslation recently, which took almost a decade to finish (a team of translators worked on it): I've read it in original and it's by no means a difficult book with some kind of unique word play.
Also, it is possible that english translators of foreign books are lazy and not well paid, because there is such a massive competition from existing native English literature.
