Why? They made 14 KoF games, with many of them being released well into the 3d era. You can't say that 3D models would cheaper than reusing 2D sprites. The sprite work for 12 and 13 is already done. They could reuse those, and create a few more new ones for new fighters. Instead of KoF game, we're getting a cheap SFIV-SFV Capcom look-alike.

Sprites were expensive as hell to make, were sub HD (wouldn't have looked that good as one would think), botched movesets, some of the characters just looked off in XIII in addition to Oda saying they couldn't find enough talented sprite artists and people who would keep up with the schedule.
