Neat. Too bad I already own a PS4 and PC so there's no reason for me to do this, but I imagine this will be nice for a lot of people.
>>
>>338334883
You could do this with an xbox 360 too
>>

Wouldn't Sony get buttmad again?
>>
>>338335372
And an first gen PS3 i bet too seeing it has native linux support back then.
Doesn't matter tho cuz PS4 is new so this shit is pretty impressive and a neat thing

One would think they make it completely impossible to use Linux after how it ended up on PS3 back then
>>
>>338335372
Not to the same degree or as easily. This is in large part possible because the PS4 uses a SOC chip built around standard bits from AMD that are supported in their open source drivers. They were able to get 3D accelleration working simply by adding a PCI id into the radeon kernel driver and that got Mesa (the open GL driver) to just work because its RadeonSI functionality supports all GCN hardware.
>>
>>338335680
Yeah, with the 360 you needed mechwarrior or something to even get it going right?
>>
>>338335928
Something like that, but even if you got it working you'd need an open driver that supports the Xbox 360's GPU which I think was custom enough that it wouldn't be supported by either r300 or r600. Makes me question why Sony freaked out when Linux devs got access to the systems GPU, it wouldn't have actually been all that useful because unlike AMD's open drivers which are better than their old closed drivers Nvidia's are really only intended to work well enough so you can install their proprietary driver which wouldn't work on the PS3's weird CPU.
>>
How is he playing the game if he didn't download it to his HDD? Is he streaming it?
>>
>>338336281
>Makes me question why Sony freaked out
>which wouldn't work on the PS3's weird CPU.
My cheap guess? Incompetent Japs had no idea of this shit so they wen't safety first and closed it completely instead of checking if it really would have been needed to begin with

>>

Thats not emulation, the PS4 is x86 and can take any linux distro

Sony has a huge lock down on its firmware because they're jews
>>
I'm curious how well it runs a pc port of generic AAA game.
>>
>>338336281
nouveau is intended to be good. The reason radeon free drivers are better is because AMD actually provides specs of their hardware and helps with development. NVidia just memes on gano / linux development, they collaborate nouveau very very minimally, and are mostly uncooperative.
>>
>>338337116
Wouldn't be my first choice of racing game on Linux but sure I guess if you want to play that it would run.

Then again PS4 might be too slow for Grid Autosport, and Dirt Rally is still not generally available yet for Linux. But still Super Tux Kart should run.
>>
>>338335076
Heh
>>
>>338337501
You realize that AMD hasn't contributed jack shit to linux like Nvidia has and Nvidia's drivers are all free too right? They're open source like everything on linux
>>
>>338335465
>using steam on PS3 linux
not a chance in hell, considering no-one has yet to have written a graphics driver w/ hardware acceleration yet.
>>
>>338337501
Yeah I didn't mean to criticize the open source developers, but they're hamstrung by Nvidia being assholes. Odds are we'll see a similar situation with the 10xx cards where the firmware to even support them minimally on anything other than the Vesa driver won't be released until their replacements are about to launch.

One of the many reasons I switched to AMD hardware.
>>
>>338337640
Gen 1 PS3's could do it before Sony shitcanned them

The Air Force was interested in PS3's as their next compact super computer but sony bricked them all and you can't do linux on it at all anymore
>>
>>338337567
Nouveau are the free (as in freedom, not price) drivers for NVidia cards on Linux, and are freedomware like they should be. NVidia provides their own proprietary drivers, but generally contributes nothing to nouveau (I think they helped with one feature in one set of cards, I forget). Nouveau has been developed entirely through reverse-engineering, and NVidia has made it worse with newer Maxwell cards, which require signed firmware.
>>
>>338337750
Linux is still possible via CFW, works on slim ps3s as well that way.
But then you're limited to distros with PowerPC support, and there aren't many out there that are compatible with the PS3.

who cares, Nvidia has contributed 15+ years of Linux support leagues over AMD. Its why Nvidia cards on linxu perform better than AMD and AMD still has huge issues on linux compatibility especially between less than popular distros

I think you're talking about Catalyst there. No one should be using Catalyst anymore. Its not even supported on modern distributions and for good reason.
>>
>>338337978
Uh, you don't know shit. AMD is the one contributing to the kernel. Nvidia historically maintained a better proprietary package but now AMD's open source drivers are usurping their old proprietary package.

Ironically AMD's cards require proprietary firmware to run, while NVidia's (up until newer cards) only required proprietary firmware for video acceleration. So the only way to run a "fully free" graphics system is to use nouveau, because while ATI cards have very good freedomware drivers, they still require proprietary firmware to work.

Its a pretty demanding game so its doubtful whether the PS4 would run it well but Xcom 2 supports Linux including the open source AMD drivers. So there are in fact AAA games that Linux has that the PS4 doesn't.

True but that locks you out of modern hardware and Nouveau has traditionally been so slow that you couldn't really think about it as a driver for gaming. That is starting to change now that the reclocking support is starting to land but they have a long way to go to catch up to AMD and Nvidia is unfortunately going to be working against them rather than with them.

Besides other than Nvidia using firmware to lock the open drivers out of working on their newer cards really they're just making it possible to update code that on older cards was permanently baked in. It may make baby Stallman cry, but it doesn't bother me any more than the cpu firmware file does so I have no problem planning to buy a Polaris card.

Yes, that's why Sony will start forcing daily system updates to prevent Linux like they did with the PS3. God that was shitty. Totally killed the PS3 forever. Couldn't play anything without a system update. Now it's going to happen to PS4. Then again a console is nothing but DRM.

Nearly every Linux port of a AAA game runs like crap though. XCOM 2, L4D2, and Arma 3 are the only games I know of that perform as well or better on Linux than Windows. Everything else you're lucky to get half or a quarter of the framerate you do on Windows, assuming the game doesn't crash before you can even test it.
