It's better now since they changed how the Patches questline works with an update. Now Patches automatically spawns after you open the doors upstairs, instead of having to reload the game and then go back to a dead end you already explored.
Anyway, all of the encounters with Seigmeir are very obvious and easy to find if you pay attention to orange messages. There's usually a bunch of orange message around the well and orange messages telling you to jump to his cage

I unironically did it blind. Sure I got lucky in the order of things but it's not impossible if you're fully exploring everything available to you before doing bosses. I failed pretty much everyone else though.

Hey, about that big not-Taurus demon you fight with Siegward, can you chop its tail off for a weapon? I distinctly remember the tail acting a little funny when I hit it, but the monster went down so fast that I couldn't get a chance to see if my suspicions were correct.

You don't know From very well if that's a bad thing for you. They're always putting old favorites in their games. Patches has been around since Demon's Souls and the Moonlight Greatsword has been in since King's Field days.
I prefer it that way. Dark Souls 2 tried to make a new cast of characters and it turned out meh. Fuck cares about some guy called 'Pate'?
But yeah, it's a shame Solaire didn't make an appearance. Probably because he doesn't survive in his canon storyline?
