Has there ever been a game or genre for you that you could just never get into, and years later it finally clicked?
For years I would try desperately to get into games like FFT and Advance Wars and just got brick walled embarassingly early in due to an inability to understand how to play properly, but a few weeks ago I loaded up Advance Wars out of boredom and suddenly understood how to play tactics. Now I'm near the end of AW2 and having a fucking blast.

i started with smash bros 64 all the way to project M, them afther evo 2013 i started to play GGXX and now im a big fan and into those games, its my favorite genre now i didnt know what was losing

Strategy games, both RTS and grand strategy. I don't have the right kind of autism for that shit.
Survival games. I could never get the appeal until I played The Long Dark, it helps that it is more focused on scavenging than crafting.

Don't know, I've heard so many wonderful things about the genre, from how in-depth they are and beyond.
My library of fighting games I have played begins and ends with Melee and Brawl; I've heard of Streetfighters and many others, that's it.
Any good games for someone trying to get in? What kind of mindset should I have?
I sucked at Pikmin 1 when it came out. I came back years later after playing 2, and managed to get into it and beat it.

I had a similar thing. I'm still terrible at RTS, but I love Pikmin, which is basically just baby's first RTS.
I'm not sure if I don't have the patience or just the reaction required to maintain shit in real time.

try something easy, but complex at the same time. afther you get the game you can go to the real fitan games
start with project M! its fast and fun
or play any GG or BB series, they are also fast and fun and easy to lern but hard to master
also you can just go and play SF4 as long you are having fun. online and with friends are essential

Could never do it, not even on easy. Then one day I picked it up everything clicked. I know its not exactly a hard game to learn but for some reason I really stuggled with it.
I disliked turn based games growing up. A reason I liked Fallout Tactics so much was continual turn based gave the illusion of real time.
Now xcom 1 and 2 and Civ 5 (I should try to pick up Civ4 it doesnt seem to have aged much if at all) are among my most played games and something 100% real time micro like men of war is too fast for me.
I think what will help for smaller turn-based stuff (squad style) is to have visuals and other stimuli give the impression of being real time. Just to help with the immersion so you don't end up feeling like

I just can't get into them, no matter which one I try.
I only understood how to play fighters after I was 20. Before I just mashed all buttons and directions at the same time.
Not "years later", but when I was a kid I had a lot of trouble with the Pokemon TCG GBC game. After crying once, I decided to get good and do away with the default deck entirely. Then I beat the game.
Recently, I got into competitive puzzle games, after never really caring or being good at them.
