What are some games similar to Dwarf Fortress, but with less micromanagement?

I don't mind complexity - I just get annoyed with baby-sitting shit (like making sure 150+ dorfs each have jobs).

>tfw Minecraft was supposed to be 3D dwarf fortress
>now it's a stagnating game primarily marketed toward children

I have heard of this - some things I've heard aren't good. What can you tell me about it?

Mods are mandatory.
I use a modpack compiled by some youtuber: http://pastebin.com/CdkBs0xz
It's basically FireflyFortress. Regular updates and you usually manage a small pop (Largest I've managed was 30ish). Only 1 z-level so no underground mining.

>actually bothering to micromanage job assignments

I just use Dwarf Therapist to assign EVERY job (except mining, hunting, and woodcutting, since those are mutually exclusive--and I also disallow fishing) to EVERY dwarf, and then change a few to be dedicated miners.

What do the mods add to the regular game that makes them "mandatory?"
>>
>>338317585
Not as much mandatory as it is just more fun. Much more fun. Also a bunch of fixes for annoying shit.
>>
>>338317562
What is so bad about not assigning dwarves jobs in the first place? I read about how people feel the need to do this, but I wasn't sure why.

I don't have many idlers, because my unemployed dorfs are busy drinking at my extensive tavern. But, obviously, that isn't making anything for the fort. or is it?

>he doesnt use Therapist

dun goofed, anon.
>>
>>338317868
If jobs aren't assigned to dwarves based on their skills and attributes, the skills will level up more slowly, I think. I really don't care, though.
>>
>>338316621
use the rapist and assign labour in bulk once you have a core set of dwarves

I guess I really should try therapist - I never got around to installing any mods/etc. for DF (just play vanilla with the default ASCII graphics).

What else does therapist do other than help you automate job assignment?

military assignments, statistics, some other shit ive forgotten since I havent played since '12

You know when people say that DF is unplayable without DT; it's not much of an exaggeration.
>>
>>338319058
Oh yes, I found military stuff horribly annoying, too.

Granted, I just have two small militias, always training, because nothing seems to want to attack my fort - so I'm probably fucked anyway.

Learn to use the workflow dfhack plugin anon, you will love it

Therapist is a must.

I just saw it on /agdg/. It's freeware, anyway.

Really? The creator is a acquaintance of mine. Good for him.

Any other mods/plugins that you'd recommend?

i dont get it, do some people really feel a need to super micro manage their forts?
The only jobs I make sure to keep up are
1 farmer for plump helmets
1 farmer for MISC crops to cover any plant material needed for a mood
1 brewer
1 legendary cook
a legendary cook making masterwork roasts is pretty much enough to keep the average dwarf happy even if most of them are sleeping in a dormitory.

I guess I just kept reading about how people micromanage that stuff, so I thought it was necessary (even though I don't do a good job myself).

My dorfs seem all right. Plenty of alcohol and food, at least.
