>The seller tells Steam support someone hijacked their account
>Valve asks for a CD key to verify they're the owner of the account
>They supply the CD key they sold you as verification
>Thank you Mr. Liou, Steam Guard and Authenticator have been deactivated, please choose a new password

Steam Guard
>>
>Thank you Mr. Liou, Steam Guard and Authenticator have been deactivated, please choose a new password

Pretty sure that doesn't happen.
The only way to remove the authentication is through a unique code you're given.
If you don't remember that code then you're fuck outta luck if you lose your phone.

Also
>buying from sellers with no rep
Let other morons do that.
>>
>>338309435
Don't buy keys from these grey sites you dork. Even GMG keys got revoked.
>>
>>338309761
They disable Steam Guard so you can re-gain access.

>>338309852
All you need to prove ownership of an account is one cd key or payment method used to purchase a game on that account. Once you provide either of these, you gain full access to the account.

Also, reputation means nothing. The keys come from various sources. There's no way for you to know why your account was hijacked. One day you try to log into Steam and realize you can't, despite having Steam Guard and Steam Authenticator. Some people might say you had malware on your phone and they gained access to both security methods. People don't think about that cheap game they bought from some chinks a couple months ago.
>>
Why did you buy from a seller with 0 stars?

You outrageous cunts, you said we should support the authors because after all we got cheap keys, and when we get cheap keys they get revoked. NO WAY *ANY* games are worth more than 30$ at launch.
>>
>>338309435

Propaganda is disgusting no matter which side slings it.
>>
>>338310275
>Even GMG keys got revoked.
GMG is an official Steam reseller and always has been, so I doubt that's possible
>>
>>338310448
>All you need to prove ownership of an account is one cd key or payment method used to purchase a game on that account.

People have no way of knowing which account a CD key they sold was activated on. They can't just go to Steam support and ask "can you give me ownership of the account associated with this CD key? The account is totes mine, I just conveniently forgot everything about it except this lone CD key."
>>
Wouldn't they need your email to do this? If they didn't have the info for the account first, showing a picture of a CD key doesn't tell them which account it's attached to. Just use a different email when buying shit and you should be fine.
>>
I have literally never had a reseller key revoked, and I've bought over 200 games through chink resellers

You retards are fear mongering for no reason. You're as likely to be caught pirating shit, meaning 0% chance.

This.
>>
>>338311136
You can get literally all information just by having a CD key.

Besides, most people use the same email to buy these cdkeys or pay for them with Paypal.
>>
>>338310661
There's no such thing as an official Steam reseller. If third party websites want to get legit keys to sell, they have to go directly to each game's respective publishers to do so. Sites which circumvent this and get keys through other means, legal as they might be, are denominated gray market resellers.

GMG got in trouble with CDPR precisely due to that. CDPR wouldn't give anyone GOG keys, much less Steam keys, for TW3 because they wanted people to buy it directly from GOG, so GMG just went and bought a bunch of physical copies on some slav country, scanned the codes and put em up for sale. Due to currency conversion they also got the keys very cheap so they could undercut GOG themselves by a significant margin and still turn a profit. Not sure if CDPR revoked the keys or not, but that move was a lot of bad rep for GMG.

>All you need to prove ownership of an account is one cd key or payment method used to purchase a game on that account. Once you provide either of these, you gain full access to the account.

If the first part of this was true, a lot of giveaway threads on here and elsewhere, in fact, the entire concept of giveaways period, would be filled with people having their accounts stolen by redeeming those keys.

A lot of giveaway threads are not filled with such people.

So... Yeah.

I have no comment on the other part since I have no idea what that means or how it'd be enough to give them the account info. There's a few more steps aside from just having a cd-key. I know that for certain.

I think you're either trolling or just have an axe to grind against folks that use this.

Good goy, believe the polack jews.

GMG got its keys from Namco, the Europe Witcher distributor, and Namco even confirmed it on their behalf.

CDPR just whined because you weren't giving them full retail of goybucks.

Providing a picture of a physical CD-key along w/ ticket information is enough to be counted as "Proof of Ownership".

You cannot use CD key to acquire account name or password, those must also be provided in the ticket to contest ownership.

Also, you can easily claim ownership over dipshit trying to contest your account by providing the card/bank that's tied to the account.

Do not activate CD Keys from untrusted sources
CD Key marketplace websites and trade forums often contain scammers that will sell or trade keys and then attempt to use the key to claim ownership of your account. For your protection, it is recommended that you avoid such sites and forums. Follow the Recommended Trading Practices for all trade interactions involving your Steam account.

Yes. All someone needs is a CDkey attached to your account to gain access to it.

It does not matter if you have Steam Guard or the Authenticator enabled.

Except that using the mobile autenticator, they disable steam guard to let you regain access only after you double confirmed with said authenticator, and since the seller doesn't have your phone, he can't do shit.

>>338310448

I've bought from G2A / GMG many times and had 0 issues.

I provide my oldest key (hl2) and get my account back. Now what?

You're asking him to provide evidence for his argument, after the entire thread he hasn't? You're beating a dead horse man.
>>
You'd still need to know basic account information like email, account ID, and whatnot.

How would a G2A seller get any of that? They gonna hack my internetz?
>>
>>338325669
>>338325748
Considering it's news to /v/ that you can claim an account simply by presenting a cd key to Steam support, I don't see why anyone would ever consider that the reason they've been hijacked is because they bought a cdkey from an untrusted party.
>>
>>338325979
yeah dude when you put in the key they give you it adds you to the botnet man!
>>
>>338325979
those 10 digits in the cd key contain malware lad, be careful and stay safe
>>
>>338326012
As if Steam wouldn't tell you why your account got hijacked when you present them with evidence that it is, in fact, YOUR account. Evidence that matters more than cd keys, like payment info.
>>
>>338326012
Okay. So not a single post anywhere on the entire internet about it. Wow, I better stop buying my games at 50% off then.
>>
>>338317924
>just linking to the steam knowledgebase without linking to the information you keep "quoting"
A++
>>
>>338326012
yeah so absolutely nothing about anyone being fucked because of this, thanks for playing
>>
>>338326223
Well, that was entertaining while it lasted. What an utter retard.
>>
>Buy key from G2A
>Get key
>Activate it on my account that they have no idea what the name is
>???
>PROFIT
>>
>>338326151
They don't.

>>338326171
>>338326327
Like I said, if people don't know this can happen, how would they ever suspect it in the first place? Most people just assume some 1337 h4x0r 'hacked' their account or they assume they've been infected with malware.

Some people don't know that trojans exist, but if you asked someone that has never used a computer if they exist and they said no, that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Valve has *confirmed* that this is something that happens. It's backed up by the fact that you can re-gain access to your account with a single cd key that has been attached to it.

The fact that you're ignoring the hard evidence and demanding anecdotal evidence means you're willfully ignorant of this issue. You want to live in lala land where you feel safe for buying keys from shady resellers. You feel that if you can move the goal post, it isn't an issue. But deep down the seed of doubt has been planted. Enjoy the constant paranoia of wondering if and when your precious Steam account will be swiped away from you. You've been warned, kiddo.

How does this work on other services?
Eg. can some chink steal my battlenet if I buy a Overwatch key?
>>
>>338327254
Like I said, no proof.

I didn't bother reading anything else you wrote. Now I'm going to close the page. Maybe buy a cheap game from g2a.
>>
>>338327254
hard evidence? where?
>>
>>338327471
Yep.

I used to sell WoW accounts on playerauctions, then after 120 days I would contact support, give them my CD key and get my account back.
>>
can you buy a game with an empty steam account and just gift it to your main, or will steam ban you or something after doing that a couple times?
>>
>>338327568
>>338327572
Steam support page.
>>
>>338327793
lmao
>>
>>338323841
chinks is the correct answer.
>>
i love g2a
>>
>>338310448
>Once you provide either of these, you gain full access to the account.
No you fucking don't. They still require email and Steam guard codes.
>>
>>338309435
And all of this could have been avoided by buying from a trusted seller with a few thousand 5 star ratings.

Or in other words: things that never happened: the thread.

so you are saying, sellers with high reputation that get load of cash for selling gray keys is going to each of all the accounts he sold the keys and the names doesnt know and even less if the email is different from the g2a account that the buyer linked to steam?
Also without having other info that the key he is going STEAM I FORGOT LITERALLY EVERYTHING FROM MY ACCOUNT, CAN I GET IT BACK WITH JUST THE KEY THAT PROBABLY ISNT EVEN MINE?, sure this can happen, but same can happen if you leave the door of your house open.
>>
>>338328663
Bzzzt. Wrong.

CD keys and forms of payment are literally master keys to gaining access to an account.
>>
>>338321660
faggot

Made a post on Reddit asking about this security flaw and everyone told me I'm perfectly safe.

4chan is a bunch fear mongers.

>collect all the CD keys I've used on G2a
>go to nearby starbucks with laptop and attempt to "recover" my account using the keys
>give them just a little less information than they need
>get denied of course
>repeat weekly with the dozen keys I have with my account over the next few months
>Valve flags my account for extremely high security risk, making any future account hijacking attempts with CD key impossible
