Singleplayer content in fighting games has never kept people anywhere close to as long as the multiplayer. MKX sold stupid well for the story but they all fucked off a week later. You can't really do much for extra modes as it isn't like you can have a different objective, just gimmick matches
The only way to make fighters popular with casuals is to redesign how they play so it isn't so hard for them, but at that point you start getting away from what a fighter is and it is a stab in the dark if anyone will actually like it.

MKX is a successful casual fighter.
I dont mean make the game less competitive or skillful to cater to casuals, but add modes and things that casuals can enjoy, such as fleshed out SP or fun modes.
It feels like they're already doing everything within their power. They hook FGC personalities up with early builds to showcase stuff, take them on board to help design the games, host the capcom pro tour tournament series, team up with all the other majors, sponsor cash prices for those even, even our shitty noname local tourney with like 20 people every month is sent tshirts and shit regularly. As far as further implementing fighting games as a Esport is concerned, they're putting in mad work.
The sad truth is, fighting games are still too complex to ever REALLY catch on. If the goal is a bigger playerbase, even more esports dough and all that, we need fighting games to be dumbed down even harder than they are already. Riot bought the studio behind Rising Thunder, I'm still thinking maybe we're gonna see a "League of Thunder" or whatever fighting game eventually, free to play with one button special moves. As much as I loathe to think about it, if you ask me, this would have the potential to get fighting games "up there" with the other giants like dota and league and counter strike and what have you. And ruin them in the process. But it's probably gonna happen one day, no matter what anyone thinks about it. Cause there's money to be made there.

They can not do something like a Mortal Kombat story mode. Not that Mortal Kombat does an amazing job, but, yknow, with a real story and characters having somewhat interesting conversations and living through an actual adventure. They are just incapable of that. It's gonna be a weird mix of the """story mode""" we have right now, and, well basically just more of that slapped together to draw it out. Shitty drawn cutscenes, with some sequences animated in-engine in between, with bad lip synching and bad voice acting and a storyline that's so bad it's comical.
And I wouldn't have it any other way. The thought of having a "real" story mode in Street Fighter is almost apalling to me. Like how porn of my favourite childhood TV series makes me a bit uncomfortable. The idea that people would abuse the Street Fighter cast to play storybook with them. What the fuck is wrong with you they are there to beat each other up, not for you to get your cinematic fill. SF3 was unpopular in Japan because of xenophobia (boohoo main character is a filthy westerner and not muh Ryu) and had poor sales in the US because of a complete lack in marketing by Capcom. It's failure in the west was entirely Capcom's, now historic, incompetence. Most people didn't even know SF3 happened until SF4 was announced.

Laura's V-skill dash is only -3 if canceled from crouching medium punch and this is in a game with 8 frames of input delay. Essentially unreachable and must be anticipated to be played around. The same principle with Ken's canceled run but much safer.

Its possible to get people interested indeepgames, but you have to be inviting. Quake 3 had years of singleplayer history all throughout the 90s and other fun and meaningful multiplier modes. Smash has fucking Nintendo characters and fun, quick dopamine releasing singleplayer modes. This content invites casuals to the core game, which keeps its integrity.
MK succeeds with its marketing, actual story, and dopamine releasing ladder mode and unlockables. The thing is NRS fucks the the core game to cater to casuals, who cant even tell the difference between different mechanics, short of "combos." Blazblue does all of this, but western still think animes gay.
