What's the best -physical- way to play GBA games in 2016?
Should I go with an cheap GBA system or is it still worth it to grab some DS iteration and get to play some DS games I missed that gen?

I think it's probably worth getting a DS if you're thinking you might also want to play some DS games. Just remember that the DSi removed the cartridge slot, so you'd have to get an earlier model.

If you're going to play solely Gameboy era games, get the GBA with a backlight or a Gameboy Advance SP so you can also play classic Gameboy and Gameboy Color games.
If you're not interested in Gameboy classic and color though, then get the DS.

I have 3 or 4 GBA SP and one classic GBA. The GBA is trash because no backlight. GBA SP is great for all Gameboy games. Gameboy Micro is nice, but plays only GBA, not classic Gameboy games.
The last gen GBA SP had better backlight, but are buttugly. Others look very nice. My fav is definitely the NES styled GBA SP.

Man, I'm a 200lbs/100kg fatso, I was so afraid of the thing just vanishing when holding in my bear hands but the thing is just so perfect. Even I can hold it for big amounts of time without getting cramps and that screen quality.. man, DAT SCREEN. You really need to experience it first hand to understand. Once you go GBA Micro you'll never go back...
