The Night elves were iconic of WC III and more marketable (see the first WoW box).
It was about reaching the median, they needed night elves for WC fans but also to take away all their distinct parts to appeal to players who just wanted to be Tolkien elves.
I mean technically it didn't work that well, as alliance fags have been begging for high elves since forever, but it's the most likely reason night elves got culturally retconned into being annoying nature hippies rather than brutal savages.

Cata wasn't even that retarded with it's lore, the elemental planes were pretty cool, the interactions with Deathwing and the other Aspects throughout questing were interesting, and even the initial raids and Firelands were well-done if a little short. What they did with the questing process in the wider world was great too, replacing the vanilla questing experience with one that is way better.
What stains the shit out of that expansion is Dragon Soul and Thrall becoming Aspect of Earth. Almost every piece of content in that raid is recycled, only Ultraxion and the final Deathwing boss have unique models. It contains a grand total of SEVEN bosses, most of which are mind-numbingly easy even on heroic, and Blizzard forced it to last for more than a whole god damn year. Most of my guild quit to go and play TOR of all things during that awful patch.
Even going back and soloing that raid is boring as hell because every boss is bookended by a shitty unskippable conversation or set of mob waves.
The only other big crime is not making a raid (or at least an explanation jeez) for what happened to Neptulon at the end of Throne of the Tides. There's even a big space for a raid portal in the same area as the dungeon portal.

The elemental plane shit was fine, It was mainly the dragon lore shit that pissed me off. Part of this is essentially the fact that Dragon Lore was written by the only writer with less talent than blizzard C-devs, Richard Knaak.
It's also the fact that Deathwing wasn't a character at all, just a big bulldozer, completely contradicting his original lore as a manipulator.
But yes, Dragon soul is so retarded, butchering the already shit basis of the Dragonflights into being a convoluted attempt by the Titans (This new lore book also really fucks with this by the way) to outwit the old gods in a single moment.

The well of eternity like the emerald dream went through multiple phases of origin over time as blizzard didn't know what to do with it.
Before the new lore book it was stated to be left by the titans to "energize the world" despite this contradicting prior lore that established arcane as being demonic in origin.
The new lore book basically retconns the titans from being Bronze or Platinum giants with hyper advanced technology into being massive captain planet like entities that are born from planets with "souls" and took all the old lore about Vanir and Aesir and applied it to the Titan-forged, the now "most elite" form of titan construct.
The idea is that worlds randomly shit out titans and titans represent pure order and go around apply order to worlds in an effort to create more of themselves. Demons are their polar opposite now, are born out of the nether and seek to devour souls and magic to fuel their fel, the power of disorder.
Then there is Void and Light and the Old Gods are an attempt by beings from the void dimension to enter reality through a corrupted titan.
