It's supposed to supply Gundyr's history, as well as the Ash lady's. There was one theory going around that it was the original Firelink, swallowed by the abyss, and that the Boss Weapon Midget helped make a new one with illusory NPC's. I don't particularly believe that one, but it's fun to think about.
We're pretty confident that it's the past though, so something that should be talked about is why the abyss is there then, but not later. Or perhaps whether or not Ludleth's previous Firekeeper had anything to do with it, since she's the one that returned form the abyss. Other than that though, there's more confused rambling about why the Flameless shrine, Firelink, and Dark Firelink are all the same. Could just be lazy development, but people think that they'd at least remove the thrones if they were doing something like that, but that's a general theory not necessarily restricted to that area.
I'm probably missing a some, but these are just a few points that have spurred a lot of discussion in the past.
