For all we know, Earth could be fine and right as rain, but that would ruin the plan. If convinced that they had to prevent something, they might actually start something and cause another shift, which is exactly what they want.

Yeah I found it weird how all the info of Earth's massive destruction was from papers and some "TV" broadcast we saw, but we never see it in action or the characters we're playing as.

You do see it, at the end when Sigma goes 45 years back in time you witness an antimatter reactor exploding the day before you leave for the moon.

I am staying off 4chan for a week as soon as E3 ends.
I bought VLR at launch for 3DS and almost nobody else had it, Played it for 50 hours straight with no breaks because I was so invested in it, finished and by the time I was done, people were only just talking about it and the PEC save corruption glitch.
I refuse to be spoiled.
