What happened was, consoles weren't big at all here for years because the C64/Spectrum/BBC Micro were so strong and people could code their own games from magazines/pirate tapes easy as shit. The NES did ok but it suffered from being seen as a simple toy compared with what people were used to. When the Mega Drive released, people were impressed. The SNES was considered the poor choice here, if you didn't have a Mega Drive you were a fucking loser, nobody gave a flying fuck about Mario.
After the Saturn spectacularly failed, most of the market went straight to the PS1, although a lot of people double dipped because the N64 was so different.
