Stop being a fag. Doom 2's level design is horrible. It consists of:

1. Hordes of monsters in enclosed spaces.
2. Monster closets.
4. Teleports.
5. Gimmicks like crusher.

It feels like a shitty megawad.

Too much teleporting the way it is in Doom 2 breaks the flow completely. MAP13 is the worst offender in my opinion.

>>338264710
>Doom 2 has large sprawling levels with varied combat situations where you have to search for keys to move forward

I completely disagree about varied combat situations since it's "push button to open another closet and SSG everyone there" most of the time but whatever. You say it like it's exactly like Serious Sam, except you push buttons to open doors there. Serious Sam also has way better weapon balance and enemy design. It's okay in Doom but Serious Sam takes it to a whole new level.

Don't worry anon, there's hope!
A guy named Kaiser, who is REALLY GOOD at doing modern ports of older games (Doom64EX, PowerslaveEX (by the way, that's another lesser-known great shooter, check it out!), Strife Veteran edition, the Turok re release) has been working on a reverse-engineered new Blood engine for a while now.
He's been keeping it on the down-low though so it's hard to find details about it. Best source of info I know of is this old thread on /vr/: https://warosu.org/vr/thread/3130152
>>
>>338274921
I remain skeptical, bloodcm ended up being shit. While Kaiser is undoubted more skilled than whoever did cm, I don't believe he will do it all right. I wouldn't mind the pleasant surprise of being wrong though.
>>
>>338274643
yes, canonically he was locked away in a tomb after doom2 only to be found and brought back by some company on mars who created a portal to hell blah blah blah argent energy blah blah blah you are the demons
>>
>>338275175
Bloodcm is an EDuke32 total conversion, Kaiser is reverse engineering it from the ground up.
>>
The games that are most similar to Doom are Heretic and Chex Quest.

The closest thing to an evolution of Doom that maintains its simplicity and carries the tradition of its highly abstract style of level design is Quake.
>>
>>338273401
god everything is such a sponge
>>
>>338275175
BloodCM is a Duke Nukem TC, hence why the controls feel wonky and the AI acts so different compared to the original game.
Kaiser's ports are made using a very versatile engine he made, combined with with reverse engineering (watching how the original game behaves and using the same value)

Considering the quality of Kaiser's ports in the past, I think it's ok to feel enthusiastic about this!

To quote the man himself:

>The way I handle it is anything regarding to damage values, health, etc is reverse engineered, because that's the most important things that needs to be done right.

>Anything regarding to player weapon swaying and object momentum speeds (such as how far you throw dynamite, or how much an explosion knocks you back) is entirely empirical, though I do rely on the assembly as a guide.

>AI behavior is 100% identical and taken directly from the disassembly. Though I do add a bit more to it so it can be easily customized by modders. The only thing I am concerned about is how the enemy aims at the player. Build engine games uses a fixed-point slope value while Kex uses atan2/angle pitch to determine the aim.... which results in the AI being a tad more accurate even while the player crouching. I have some ideas to emulate the fixed point slope behavior though.

>Everything else (renderer, collision, resource management, etc) is done from scratch.

>Surprisingly enough, the 'cansee' function from Build is actually bugged and explains why some explosions do no damage to objects, even when its right next to it. Since Kex has its own way of handling this, explosions will now be guaranteed to damage whatever that is within its blast radius.

>I don't intend on alienating BloodCM (a favorite of mine btw) or BloodXL. I am just simply offering another way to enjoy Blood without needing DosBox. In fact my original intention was to show off a more GPL-friendly engine that can run a Build game. I choosed Blood because it's actually the most organized of the Build games (3D Realms' code looks like fucking chicken scratch).

>However, its simply up to the user's preference. BloodEX will have the capabilities to support Blood mods though.

>>

>>
>>338275894
I thought the build engine was open source. why does he have to reverse engineer everything?
>>
>>338262747
Damn I've seen playing doom 1 lately and it's fucking hard to adjust to. I put in on hard mode and I've found the shotgun the best weapon so far. I think I'm on level 4 or 5.
>>
>>338276881
From what I gather, the way Build works is, you've got your engine files, and you got your game files, and when you mix the two it makes the game works
So, even though the Build engine itself has become open source, some games such as Blood never had their source codes released, which means you can't access the files and specific changes made to the engine contained within the Blood code.
And good luck trying to get the actual source, Atari has been sitting its fat ass on it for years and refuses to sell anything.
>>
>>338276881
blood isn't open source.
>>
>>338264207
Ive just played that map in Doom 2

There is a point where you get placed on a pillar with imps around you, killed them, then jumped down and there were a bunch of the big pink demons which i killed too.

Now i tried E and i tried shooting all the walls in that pit but i couldnt find a way to get out the door which were way above so i had to use the noclip cheat to get up there, it were the only time ive been stuck and had to use a cheat to progress.

Can someone tell me the no cheating way to get out of that door?

>>338278878
Dosbox is good enough for most game including Blood. There are tiny timing differences and as a result the 'I'll swallow your soul' hands are much deadlier on a modern PC but that's not really Dosbox at fault so much as your hotrod PC being too fast for it's own good. You're not usually gonna notice this stuff when playing. As long as you get a decent framerate, you're gold.
