You don't even need to be good to finish hard games. I suck at godhand yet I played it, beat it and enjoyed it. "git gud" is more of a response to people blaming game mechanics on their own failures. even on /v/ you don't get derided with it unless you're being a lil bitch and unfairly blaming the game

It's not "gaming journalism" that's the problem, it's the nature of journalism as a whole. I'm a professional journalist and honest to god the climate of the industry right now is fear and loathing (no pun intended). The older generation looks at us younger guys and shouts "save us!" Like we've got the magic bullet to competing with sensationalist bullshit and STILL being profitable.

You can't fix "gaming journalism" without first fixing journalism as a whole.

God almighty what a time to be alive. I picked the wrong time to love journalism, that's for sure.

People need to remember not every game has accommodate you 100%. It's ok to walk away from a game that's too hard for you to beat.

The KID one, like, okay there are weird mini games that could be seen as dodgy by some people but the surrounding game wasn't that great.

The Bayo 2 one pisses me off more, they fully acknowledge that it's "better than the first" and how fantastic the mechanics are, but give it a 7.5 because it has a sexy woman in it. That's the main negative point in their conclusion that they stress three times, apparently enough to knock the game down to a 7.5

This. My gf can't stand dark souls and Bloodborne, but when I watch her play she has no patience to learn the spacing, the timing, all the tools and weapons available, and the essence of those games is you have to learn to play them on their terms. The games aren't bad: she just wants to do whatever she wants because that's what she wants out of games, and these are games that demand you learn them, rather than just letting you stumble through.

I think a lot of these "journalists" are really just frustrated and embarrassed that they aren't the target demographic for a change, and they are so accustomed to touring through games however they want that they can't comprehend what people could possibly enjoy about a game that's more than an inch deep. They like the amusement park Zelda adventure, not the challenge of exploring and mastering something through exploration and patience. They can't imagine resistance and delayed gratification are satisfying because they just want to "play a game," not expend effort.

People will feel like they wasted their time and/or money if a game is too hard for them and they're unable or unwilling to get good enough to enjoy it. I don't personally agree with that mindset, I quite enjoy the process of learning and overcoming a game, but especially for casual players I understand where they're coming from.

These threads always make me sad.

In my childhood I dreamt of a video game related job. In my ignorance I thought I had to learn to program to accomplish that.
Back then I didn't realize that making video games has many different aspects to it, and game developers are more than just programmers, for example there are artists involved too.
And even in my wildest dreams I couldn't imagine there would be a time, when some people are PAID TO PLAY vidya and write about it.

I could have been one of those people, instead of those bitter entitled nu-males, who hate the very games they're supposed to play.
And here I am now, working at a nuclear research institute, coding some high voltage module controlling software.

>>
>>338261748
I'd argue that you can fit Gone Home on a horror list

If you play it without knowing the plot it makes you think the game is a horror, gradually ramping up the dread until you realise that all of the horror stuff was just incidental details

There's the ghost stuff, the red hairspray in the bath that looks like blood, the secret passages, the dark lighting

A big part of what actually works about GH is playing with your expectations

This guy is a faggot, but I will say that the opposite end of the spectrum is just as bad.

I used to play a small indie halo-like shooter, which had a small group of 12-year-olds who thought themselves hardcore competitive gamers. The developers used to be pretty open about taking criticism and suggestions for the game, but eventually it reached the point where every post on the forums would be shouted down by a horde of elitist faggots who thought their shit didn't stink. One of the children in particular literally refused to consider your points in an argument unless you could beat him in a 1v1. He spoke in 4chan jargon too so I know he's one of you faggots. Today the forums are dead because the competitive kiddies chased everyone else off and then moved to CS:GO.

Again, I'm definitely not defending the mouthbreathers who think every game should have skippable everything, but the YOU'RE NOT A PRO-LEVEL PLAYER SO YOU DON'T GET AN OPINION mentality really needs to fuck off. Surely there is middle ground between the two.

>>
>>338259450

This is unfortunately how a lot of kids these days are raised. They are not taught about failure and the fact that some people are just bad at some things. Most of them never fail anything (even when they do) and even if they actually do fail they're just told they got an A for effort or some other bullshit to hide the fact that they failed.

It seems the people raised like this are starting to become adults now and are trying to apply this same logic to video games. They need to fuck off.

>>
>>338261896
OP and this are essentially the same problem.
Games having watered down mechanics and games catering only to a small part of the community are both the result of the failure of the developers' integrity.
Instead of simply making the game true to their initial vision of the game, they start to please a certain demographic, or even worse, trying to please everyone.

Back in the day, being a programmer and a game dev were pretty much the same thing, but obviously visual expression has gotten so complex simple art won't cut it anymore (unless you're indie, and even then it's a toss up), so yeah things change. Kinda like space invaders, shoot where they're going to be, not where they are, not so easy though.

For the perceived horror elements of the game to work you have to go in absolutely blind. That doesn't make it a horror game, that makes it false advertising. It makes me sad, is what it is. Journalism is incredibly fulfilling for me. I'm an idealist, I know, but I still have this vision of this noble truth bringer, this cigarettes and coffee sorta guy who lives and dies by the validity of his word. The kinda journalism you read about in your history classes.

There's still an incredible need for journalism. We saw that with the Snowden leaks, and recently with the Panama Papers. We have a duty so important to our country that there are stipulations in the Constitution that apply specifically to us.

And it's all changing. I don't know where this ride may take me, or if it will ever end, but I'm not ready to get off Mr. Jefferson's wild ride just yet.

>>
>>338262139
The game didn't cater to them, that was the thing. The developers wanted something fun and casual like Halo 3, and the vocal majority wanted a Halo 1/2 clone where every fight is a boring long range pistol or sniper duel. the developers tried to balance the two visions, got so much shit for it that they practically got chased off of their own forums.

How come there is no alternative to these shill / clickbait based blogs that is also a sustainable business model?

At least one site?

Same is with movies. Look at how Rotten Tomatoes pushes the agenda of cultural marxism by giving extremely low 'metascores' to doubleplus ungood crimethink works. In advance.

What's worse, now ecelebs are starting to have more clout than sites that didn't put personality in front of the video game.

There are two sustainable business models for written content:

Ad-based (which means you have to generate as many clicks as possible to even be profitable) and subscription-based.

Nobody wants to pay a subscription for quality written content, so in the end I guess we get what we deserve.

Gaming skill has nothing to do with it, and I guarantee you 99 percent of /v/ has no SKILL to accurately understand a video game. You don't know how orthogonal projection works, you have no idea what anisotropic filtering is, how the parallax model in a certain video game was made, how the animation influences response etc. It's a highly technical medium so people sidestep it into "feels" and "30fps lol" nonsense.

Structuralism is the only objective approach to video game criticism, this is - in terms of symbolic significance, literary, aural, whatever merit - an infantile medium with extremely simplistic "messages". It needs to be judged by the umbrella term TECHNOLOGY and when you educate yourself in things that matter you can clearly see that games are getting worse and have less features than those released 30 years ago; look at western indie scene who didn't quite reach the lofty heights of fucking NES video games.
