It's because of two reasons: every aspect of the game: the respawning, the player, etc. are all canon. The little hooded figure in pic related is the player, doomguy's gaurdian angel essentialy.
Secondly, hell is now essentialy a "hub" dimension that's connected to infinte other dimensions. And every single version of DOOM, even the mods, was simply one of those dimensions.

People arguing that he can just quick load and win the fight, if all wads are canon there's plenty of wads where they end with Doomguy dieing.
He's fairly squishy if we're assuming Ultra Violence is standard but there's a good chunk of characters he could straight up beat without getting booted from their dimension now. Like he could probably wipe the floor with Chief now that his weapons are more modernized.
That being said omni powerful badasses like Asura, Dante, Superman etc could out class him in raw power. Unless we factor in the idea doomguy can get a hold of something that can harm them (like the demon destroying gun vs Dante or kryptonite vs Superman) but that kinda throws the comparison of base character ability out the window.
If we played power levels Deadpool would be a fairly even match just due to tenacity/revivabilty, firepower and agility.
As someone who's never played Doom but wants to give the original a quick go before playing the new one, what am I in for? Has it aged poorly?
