When you outleveled a quest, and it turns gray in the journal, it doesn't mean just that it would be easy for you to complete. It drastically reduces the amount of exp you get for completing it.
If you don't hunt secondary quests while they're at least green, you're actually losing quest exp, and thus the max level attainable in the current playthrough.

I've yet to be put in a situation like that so I can't really put in an argument here.
So far, at least, way beyond Skellige in the main storyline at ~lvl 23, I've not run into this problem, and I've played through on Death March, as I mentioned earlier. And I've often gone out of my way to take contracts and side quests. Not all of them though, I mean I didn't calculate which town to go to next to get missions from the message boards.

Started on deaths March (I think that's the hardest difficulty?) and the combat is TOUGH. Not complaining about the difficulty at all, but am I doing something wrong? I tend to die a lot, and I am pretty adept at the souls series / video games in general.

I wanted to make all potions, expensive alcohol goes for what , i don't remember now, I think it's something about 150 to 300 and it doesn't drop anywhere or very very rare. Please, for the love of god learn how to use the actual dodge skill, not roll. Second, learn to parry enemies that you can (read bestiary). And third, apply oils and potions as the situation demands.
I personally found the game way more enjoyable once I put the movement to alternate in the game options, while using a gamepad. I'll probably come up with better advice after this post but this is of the top of my head.

Change the movement or controls to alternate in the settings, the one that modifies the turning radius.
Use the dodge/step maneuver for most attacks. It allows you to follow up with attacks better and doesn't take as long to recover, it's the main way you dodge.
The roll is utilized for enemies with huge AOE attacks or when you aren't focused on counterattacks and need to get the fuck away for some reason.
Always apply hanged man's venom, keep refreshing it between fights since it's always good to have damage buff against humans. Craft northern wind bombs as soon as you can because the freeze ability is a get out of jail free card.

You could always configure it differently if you're on PC. By default is right ALT, though I use a 360 gamepad so I just press the B button.
I can't tell you how to do it, just find a way that you're comfortable with. All I can say is, I use mouse and keyboard for damn near everything, but this game and racing games are the exception.

Snag that one Alchemy tree skill that ups your toxicity threshold for every potion crafted. It's nice early on and as you get farther in the game it lets you go nuts. Especially if you're not specializing in potions.

Heart of Stone I'd argue is still just some extra content even though it's amazing. But Blood and Wine is a huge new map, an entire UI overhaul, new systems and skill tree modifications and all sorts of new story stuff.

FriendlyHUD is a bit heavy with all these features. I've been using immersiveHUD for my last playthrough. It just makes hud invisible, you can watch minimap and objective if you activate witcher senses and hp bar and all that combat related nonsence is not visible out of actual combat or unless you have full hp. What does over leveling even do for you given that you have limited skill slots? Do you get other stats for leveling besides just vitality? I know more skill points means you can afford to dump points in crap so you unlock good stuff in other trees but for the most part you can get everything you want with the limited skill slots by the time you're 35-40.

He means the Cherry Cordial and that other one that almost never comes from loot, the black and white alcohol needed to make White Gull. Even then, you can buy them from almost any bartender and you only need 1 of each to make a White Gull, which is needed to make the base powder shit for the potions. So at most you'd need like 4-6 of each for a potion (all upgrades), not 50 per potion.
I buy tons of shit and I was at 40k-50k around the end of the game always. And that is AFTER fully upgrading all the Witcher armors to mastercraft which costed tons.

They fixed most of the broken elements. That doesn't mean the alchemy is weak, though. For my 100% playthrough before B&W I made an all-rounder, with some signs, alchemy and swordfight.
Although, basically, the first thing you need is the perk in alchemy increasing your toxicity by 1 per each recipe.
And after that - whirlwind, and longer whirlwind upgrade from the Ofieri merchant from HoS.

Still OP. If you just want to never die and kill shit, get alchemy points in stuff like incerasing your toxicity and oils bleed and junk. Use Ekidna and Arch Griffin decoction and just spam strong attack. You'll heal a ton of health and stagger things all day with each attack. Throw some bombs if shit gets mobby.

I found that it runs really well on most decent computers as long as you turn off hair physics. The hair physics really kill your fps even though its pretty cool.

frames only drop in the cities. I started TW3 on a 660 and got 60 on med-high, down to 40 when i first got to novigrad. you can probably expect a solid 60 all around if you don't have a shit processor.
