It's all about the games
No 3rd party support.
The new generation does not care that much about their colorful games.
They can't make a new hit anymore because even if a Wii U game is good, no one would still buy it because they don't own a Wii U.
I don't know, the only barely successful aspect in their business are amiibo and 3DS.
Uncharted 4 was the straw that broke the camel's back. They saw it and said "What's the point anymore? We'll never be able to compete"

Because games ain't making them enough money so they're branching into other things as well and hopefully also preparing higher quality games than they've put out recently to make a bigger splash with their next system.
