Usually Top, but there is one mandatory jump in Maximo which requires you to essentially triple jump by running off the ledge, then jumping and then double jumping.

It was really out of place, it was the intro level to the hub of the final world, you have to jump off some siege engine thing.

There really isnt a true double jump in DKC. Thats just using roll mechanics to your advantage.

I do think there were a couple special zone stages in DKC3 that required the suicide jump to finish the stage which was cool.

in most games I've played with a double jump like that, usually the top path leads to me taking more fall damage than the bottom path. This is usually because the game calculates fall damage based on force by acceleration due to gravity.

In TF2 this is apparent, the Scout can double jump and he can fall from great heights and not take damage because of this, that last double jump negates all his momentum and then he lands light as a feather

In some games, doing the second one will mitigate fall damage, so it is obviously superior for those games. In some games, you can jump the furthest by doing your second jump at the top of your first jump. In those games, you wouldn't even make it across the gap if you went with the second method, thus the first would be better.
