Hey guys, since NewDoom is a hot topic, lets talk about what source ports.

I used ZDoom to play 1 and 2 a while back, though I'm considering trying Chocolate Doom to play the Master Levels and Final Doom.

What do you guys think?

Zandronum is just an older zdoom with multiplayer focus

PrBoom Plus is pretty nice if you want something accurate and newish
It also has the best demo playback

Chocolate Doom would be the most accurate, but sticking with 320x200 is retarded

Dosbox is an option if you want to go through the trouble, you can play at 640x400 with an average PC.

Why the fuck is Doom 2 so hard?

I just wanted to play through it on Ultra Violence but its get so tiring to play through. So many enemies.

I'd use Chocolate Doom for stuff designed without mouselook in mind, like Master Levels and Final Doom, I also think Doom looks best with the original rendering, the modern renderers soften everything and it really looks funky

But yeah, there's no reason to be using full mouselook in the original ID made maps, WADs and shit yeah, Master Levels no

I like playing Doom as original as possible. I played chocolate doom for awhile but lately been using doomretro as it's a little less fuss and better conforms to modern monitors. Just my take though.

Do it. It changes the game more than people think. The low resolution hides pinkies extremely well and you'll get proper era support for how everything operated.

Do still use mouse+keyboard. You could still configure wasd or other such configurations even during those days, some people at least used similar setups. Most of the demos that the game flips through are played using the mouse for aiming.

Check ZDaemon/Zandronum. Been a couple years since I played on either, but they usually have some active servers, though usually more for co-op than deathmatch/ctf

the standard is zdoom.

if you can't ass yourself to configure to play like the 1993 experience, then just do chocolate doom.

if you really want to play it like in 1993, dosbox

gzdoom allows for fancy things but the filters absolutely rape graphics.

Zandromum and it's older cousin skulltag where multiplayer minded ports

just remember the making ports for doom is a hobby almost in an on itself. the standards for playing the game have always been zdoom, gzdoom and zandronum

I don't have the file right now, but there's a custom map that show some of the engine inconsistencies.
For example, after teleporting and walking over a tiny gap would make you fall in zdoom but not in the original game.

metroid deadnought is a fucking awesome wad but it starts off easy, gets pretty tough and then you hit a critical mass of upgrades and it gets piss easy again.

Still fun as fuck though, the long beam is super satisfying, I wish it was rainbow colored like the hyper beam in super metroid

Doomsday is a pretty decent source port if you want the old game with more modern graphics.

I'd like to play Doom on a recent modern engine, but I can't seem to find anything like that

if you're gonna play the master levels in chocolate doom you're gonna have to use the command line every single time, it's annoying

copy it to notepad and save as .bat
it's completely safe, I wrote it myself


for it to work you need to put your main wads (doom.wad, doom2.wad, etc.) in a "wads" folder inside the chocolate doom folder, and the master level wads in "masterlevels" folder inside the wads folder

It's because Doom is a reskinned top-down shooter. Doom and Splatoon both avoid a lot of the trappings of the genre, which is probably why you find them so fun.

Yeah, though most of these aren't mods. Before they were killed and had their corpse dragged through public by Zenimax Id used to release the source code of all of their games so these tend to be updated versions of the game engine that you just have to copy the game files for.

Even Doom 3 has projects to keep it up to date like dhwem. Though unfortunately that's the last generation of Id games to have their engines opened. Which means newer Id games will wind up having problems running on newer systems in a decade.
