Is ultrawide even worth it for gaming? Are there even any games that use it

Most games handle 21:9 correctly. The problems crop up when you try to do 3 monitor surround.

that monitor is sexy af

For some games, it's way more immersive and visually impressive. FFXIV on 21:9 is a completely different looking game to traditional 16:9. The Division also is mind blowing in 21:9 and pretty alright in 16:9. WoW looks absolutely terrible at 21:9 and doesn't play so great, but I guess it's a 2004 game really.

Lots of popular games don't handle it properly though, and it's generally a pain in the ass unless the programmers bothered to support it. Anything older than the past few years is guaranteed not to support it, and many AAA games released last year and this year don't support it - COD, etc.

I recommend it, but I also bought a 16:9 2560x1440 monitor for games that don't work great with it.

What graphics card do you have where 21:9 wow is a problem?
>>
>>338199971
It's not running it that's the problem, it runs great, it's just the larger resolution makes the game look really crummy. The 21:9 aspect is like a multiplier on the existing graphics, if it's good in 16:9, it'll look fantastic at 21:9. Seems to work the other way around too, bad goes to terrible.

Also, Fallout 4 doesn't work in ultrawide without mods. Wolfenstein: The New Order works awesome, and looks 10/10.

not according to this site
http://www.wsgf.org/

only a handful of titles work with 21:9 and that's not taking into account all the tedious shit you have to go through to "hack" it in to working in that resolution with all the glitches and shit that come with it
>>
>>338199320
Might be better to just invest in a larger 4K curved screen that has the same width and then manipulate the field of view.

Most big titles has support for it but for some its just on paper, some games don't play to perfect with it. Like BF4 as an example, your ammo counter etc are still stuck in 16:9 mode.

Yeah, lots of games need a hack using a program called Flawless Widescreen. It gets really fucking annoying after a while. Games like Witcher 3 chug pretty hard at 21:9 resolutions too, it's very demanding on hardware. I'm running a 980 and 4590k and the framerate rarely hits 60 at 3440x1440
>>
>>338200367
i want a new monitor but the problem is i want to play older games like Fallout 3, New Vegas, VtMB, Mass Effect 1-3, Max Payne 1-3. I don't give a shit about modern games.

Those probably won't work in 21:9 so i'd be retarded to buy an ultra wide monitor for 1500 bucks and not be able to use it properly
>>
>>338199320
3d games work at any resolution you choose.
>>
>>338200431
people were really complaining on that forum about witcher 3 fucking up in widescreen mode and some even wanted to donate to whoever could fix it to work properly on 21:9
>>
>>338199320
Yeah it's great.
You can spot things in your peripheral vision. Doesn't sound like a big difference but it really is. You feel more immersed because you naturally spot things in the edge of your vision as you would in real life, instead of having to move the camera around and scan for stuff. Going back to a normal screen from an ultrawide feels very constricting, like you're suddenly playing all your games through a window
>>
>>338200604
Max Payne 3 works great, very hard on your GPU though at 21:9. The ME series works not well, buggy as fuck. No idea about the others, but considering FO4 doesn't work in 21:9, I can't imagine 3 and NV work.
>>
>>338200802
i'm grabbing a gtx1080 too to go the monitor that i end up buying (either the PG279Q or the PG348Q)

Widescreen in theory would be fucking great and immersive but in practice games rarely seem to work (well) with it which is a damn shame
>>
>>338200768
It works great in my experience, just wrecks your video card. Not being 60fps is annoying. I had to downgrade to 2560x1080 to get acceptable performance
>>
>>338200604
Custom game resolutions and FOV are possible, I've only done it with BF2 though since that is the only game I've played that didn't have support for FHD but it should be possible on other titles.
>>
>>338200970
Right, a 1080 will actually fix all the performance problems I mentioned. Witcher 3 gets like 80fps average at 3440x1440 Ultra on the 1080.

Games like The Division are absolutely nuts on ultrawide, I highly recommend it. It's a totally different game at 21:9
>>
>>338200230
Most games scale horizontally and the hud is a fixed distance from the sides of the screen. There are some issues and certain games don't support it correctly, but for the most part it works fine and you can still play 16:9 on games that dont.

>monster 900x2880 display
>out of this world
We sure have come quite a way.
>>
>>338201090
i've read some about that but it seems like a bitch to keep doing it for every single game
>>
>>338201445
It's very annoying, and in games like Dark Souls 2/3 I hear you'll probably be banned for 'hacking' or whatever
>>
>>338201627
thats whats keeping me away from ultra wide, i already don't have a lot of free time so I'd rather not spend what little I have trying to fix a game to work on a resolution rather than actually play it instead

oh well
>>
>>338201445
For BF2 it was just adding a short text code in the launcher icon or something.

Annoying if you are gonna play 50 games but you can deal with it as long as it works fine in the end. Biggest issue is of course FOV and cinematics and some other stuff that doesn't scale.

>>338201778
what monitor do you have

Sorry, 2 minutes

Goddamn, I upgraded from a dinky 21" 1080p monitor to a 25" 1440p and the difference is amazing.
So much more desktop to work with and you can really see all kinds of new detail in vidya. I can very easily distance spot enemies in ARMA 3 now and I found it easier to judge distances in Assetto Corsa.
The image even looks crisper than the smaller screen did.
>>
>>338203186
imagine upgrading to 34" 1440p 100hz
>>
21:9>VR

Now VR with 21:9 will be amazing.
>>
>>338203186
4K screens are quite mind blowing.
