Plus there's loads of things the game is missing. The actual design is very aimless. It has aspects of survival and adventure and sandbox gameplay but all of those aspects are lacking in depth.
The survival is just "making a house with bed, occasionally eat. Congrats, you've survived everything", the adventure is nothing because the gameplay isn't really built for anything except breaking and placing blocks. The sandbox aspect is just building nonfunctional stuff with no purpose, the only way to make anything that does stuff is to go total autistic with redstone which no rational person has the patience for.
minecraft not on java, with cool effects and improved movement as well as more building options. maybe make it like factario but with water power/steam power, i never felt like the tekkit stuff really fit the minecraft setting.

There is merchandise that uses the current graphics, the creeper, despite looking like a rotten dog turd somehow standing on its own power, is a super popular design. An optimized C++ engine using Vulkan instead of OpenGL. An actual and extensive modding API using embedded lua or a python-style scripting language. The design of this part would be key, because it needs to expose almost everything the game engine can do.

The issue with a mod API is you have to be careful about allowing everything. Otherwise you can create mods that are seen as legit by the game, but allow you to cheat.
For example you can use Forge and class reflection atm to have a hack client that doesn't alter any base code, it just uses hooks provided by Forges API.

Under Notch's laziness and ADD, minecraft pursued multiple directions of gameplay ranging from an exploration adventure rpg, a building sandbox and a survival game.
It sucked ass at every attempt , stopping half way at either direction before giving up.
Terraria on the other hand pursued one direction, an adventure rpg with building as a side note, and pursued the fuck out of it until it became a solid and addicting experience.
Minecraft might as well be 3d terraria at this point, so for minecraft 2 they simply need to make combat a top priority.
