I saw a little cousin playing Sonic 2 on his mother's phone and I knew he likes Pokemon. I Thought it would be a good idea to give him my old, beaten Aqua Blue 3DS. I pirated a bunch of games for him.

I immediately remembered the interviews where the guys at Gamefreak said they weren't including the battle frontier or whatever it was called and they were adding training aids because kids wouldn't spend that much time on a game.
And it's true. Fuckers these days can't hold their attention on a damn thing. I showed him Kid Icarus Uprsing and, while he loved flying sections, he said ground parts were too difficult. The damn thing is literally walking and shooting with some aiming. I mastered Duke Nukem 64 and Jet Force Gemini with the N64 controller when I was 10.

It's a real problem for Nintendo that isn't going away. It's very hard to get the barrier of entry any lower than a mobile device you already have and are taking with you anyway that plays free games [emulators or F2P type stuff] or pretty cheap digital stuff.
It's basically down to the people who are willing to carry an additional device or want bigger games/better controls. That means it probably skews older than dedicated handhelds did in the past.
Nintendo needs to find a way to make their next handheld function in ways that the everday-carry devices do and set up their own mobile distribution platform, or they are basically resigned to being an also-ran putting out their games on Android/iOS. They may already be staring that down.

Then, not realising that said core aren't interested in buying a platform for a few worthwhile games, they wait until there are a lot of games. Those games just didn't come, but the games for the casuals arose in their fucking droves. For every Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade X, and Wonderful 101, there's 5 Marios, a Yoshi, several games of Mario doing other shit with his friends, and 2 mini game collections.

Nobody even gives Nintendo the time of day anymore. The Wii U is their least successful home console of all time and the 3DS is their least successful handheld of all time. The Wii U is getting destroyed by the PS4 and the 3DS is getting destroyed by iOS and Android. The absolute pittance of games the two systems are getting this year is a sign that they're abandoning these platforms(despite what they say otherwise) and putting their eggs in the NX basket.
