Because the xbox ONE was part of their plan for Windows 10. An all in ONE entertainment system, videogames, tv, steaming services like netlix. If they go through their plan and emulate the original xbox you will have OG xbox and xbox 360 on ONE console, and apparently the xbone is the last Xbox, they will only make variations of it.
Also shared apps with WP and Win10 PCs.
The word "ONE" means everything for then.

But thats retarded since anyone I know just calls each console by its first name regardless of gen. For all playstations I always just said "gonna play some playstation" or some shit. People assumed I just meant whichever playstation was the most current one. Same with xbox. Didn't know many people who referred to it in person as 360 though I do admit that was always typed online.

Its called the Xbone One because it's supposed to be an all in one media machine. They did a simiar thing with the 360 as in it was supposed to revolve around you. It's an OK name but I wish they went with a more traditional system of naming their consoles. Xbox 1, Xbox 2, etc etc.
