Kirkbride indeed was probably the recipe of Morrowind's success - unique and outlandish lore of Vvardenfell is definitely what hooked me and many others. I didn't know anything about previous TES games but all the books and character dialogues and land painted such a detailed world... The quests, man. Oblivion has the best quests in the series. That's one thing that mods can never change. For all the grafix, Skyrim will always be Dungeons & Draugrs. Morrowind is honestly kind of boring with the copy/pasted NPCs. I'm not going to go into the retcon that was Oblivion's world because it doesn't really matter, but it was a bland world, they tried to make a distinction between the border to Skyrim, the colovian highlands, the nibenay basin and the border to black marsh but in the actual game there only was a discernible difference between the mountanious zones and the rest.
The swamp didn't feel like a swamp at all.
And there was a complete lack of dense forests.
And that's without mentioning the limited diversity of dungeons, that amount to caves, ayleid ruins, forts and oblivion gates (that are a chore to begin with).
The world was just boring as fuck.
Leveling scaling is not only the enemies leveling with you, but the whole world, with contributed with the blandness of it to make exploration almost entirely pointless, since you'll never find loot that won't be obsolete in a few levels.

I hardly play vidya games any more, I buy them even less. I am by your standards of /v/ an old man with kids. I bought DLC for heroseige, a game one of my kids gave me from his 4 pack. I burned through the DLC in like an hour. I was not even trying, I just started playing and it was over with. 1 hour was $2.50. Thats modern gaming. Thats what your money is worth in modern games. That is why I quit a few years ago. I gave up. None of you fucking understand or care I know but it used to make economic sense for me with video games. I hated TV, I wanted something to kill time at home so I played PC games.
I would pay $30 for a fallout or Elder Scrolls game and get literally thousands of hours for the money, no DLC involved. I would spend a fucking year looking in every nook and cranny doing every conceivable thing to every conceivable critter with every mod found or made myself. I mean that was some fucking value. Now, $2.50 an hour. For an indy game no less. And that one is a steal compared to some of the others.
Its scary to think its just going to get worse from here. Like somebody today will look back 20 years from now and think "oh man, it used to be fucking awesome! I used to only pay a days wages for a game that would last me all weekend! These days in 2036 you gotta hook up the blood draw or do payment plans to get through the weekend. I mean yea the graphics are good but shit I gotta eat too".
And then somebody calls him out for being only middle class instead of the .001%.

It was never about money for me because piracy has been ever present, but gaming has taken a turn for the worst after about 2005. That's not to say there weren't any shit games ten, twelve years ago, but there were a lot of great games. Now it's all the same production, DLC+microtransaction scheme.
