Besides the start menu being stupider (although I turned off the extra bullshit) it works pretty much just like win7. I am running an older machine with an i5-760 and gtx470 and I have seen improvements in performance. Nothing groundbreaking but enough to notice on things like arma.

-allocate enough HDD space
-allocate enough RAM
-support DirectX 11
From my attempts scouring the net for a way to play it without the "upgrade" I could not find one that worked. Even the software that claimed to support DX11 in actuality did not, and it was fairly common that the other 2 requirements weren't available as well.
I eventually bit the bullet and gave the upgrade a go, and it's been OK. It's absolutely necessary to get Classic Shell, which restores a Win7/XP/Classic Start Menu with the original search feature and direct access to the legacy Control Panel.

8.1 was already rather good at breaking old shit and 10 is even worse. That combined with the bizarre UI issues (chief among them the utterly idiotic clusterfuck that is the control panel), the extreme insistence and pushiness about the entire upgrade thing, the stupid shit they're pulling with regular OS updates, the alarmingly bad "features" like sharing your wifi password over social media etc. just makes me even more certain I'll be sticking with 7 for years to come.
