I downloaded Eldewrito last week. Been having a blast. Moreso on the weekends when it's more active. I recommend it since it's on PC and is FREE. Big Team CTF isn't very good on it right now though since there's a bug that makes it where you can't exit the passenger seats on hogs. At least with a gamepad.

You need your memory jogged? Halo 4's campaign confused every Halo fan that didn't read nuHalo novels. And it came out when the 7th gen of consoles was really done. The Xbone was dead on arrival since you know Microsoft sought out to kill themselves at E3 with always online, forced Kinect, etc. Everyone migrated from the 360 to PS4 and PC (fucking F2P MOBAs and F2P TF2 aren't things Halo 3 had to compete against).

Halo was a more casual arena fps, which was still popular back then, nowadays arena shooters don't have a leg to stand on. A lot of people simply didn;t buy the game because it didn't have Bungie's name on the box. Also 343 did worsen the series with 4 but did improve the multplayer with 5, not enough though to bring back the hordes of fans though.
It's quite similar with wow in terms of change, they know the old way won't cut it with the modern demographics, so they make changes which, in our mind make it worse but to the more casual player makes it more convenient. You could also add that the sheer number of games available to play nowadays also lends to the drop in player #s. Back in 07 Halo was only really competing with CoD4 and to a lesser extent GoW on the 360, now the list just goes on and on.

I'd put it realistically at ~50k at any given moment with ~100k unique players in a 24 hour period. I'm pulling those numbers out of my ass and judging from my personal playtime (I play every day) and have no problem finding matches and rarely see the same people.

This idea that because Halo 3 had at one point upwards of 10 million active players, that there's millions of displaced Halo players out there that left the series because they felt betrayed or some dumb shit.
There's people right now that think if Halo 4 had been Halo 3 again with better graphics, things would be any different.
The overwhelming majority of Halo 3 players were PS2 babbies that made the jump to 360. These kids played Halo 3 when they were in middle school or maybe early high school. These were the kids that infested the community with gay ass gametypes like fat man and jenga on countless udentical-looking brown and dusty sandbox maps. These are the kids that are so blinded of their nostalgia for Halo 3, that they think the campaign wasn't a monumental disappointment and a poorly rushed ending to the trilogy.
Most of these kids never had any true alligiance. When COD 4 came out, most of them jumped ship. The instant gratification that COD provides has kept their interest. Many of them now have moved on to Destiny, GTA V, or the division.
Is 343 Industries incompetent? Absolutely, but they could have made the greatest halo game ever and things wouldn't be much different. It's an exclusive franchise on a console that normies don't want anything to do with now. Stop spreading this lie that most players felt "betrayed" or some dumb shit. Most players never really gave a fuck.
