I remember when there was heavy resistance to DotA on /v/. Any time it was mentioned it would get spammed with "MOBA SHIT" "CASUAL GARBAGE" "THE WHOLE GENRE IS CANCER!"
I even expect that many of these people played WC3, but refused to play DotA because they thought it drained life out of WC3 and other custom games.
Then people actually tried the game and saw how difficult it is, and realized how it stands apart from actual garbage games like LoL.
Now it seems there's a population on /v/ that accepts the game and most of the flamers don't attack anymore.
Overwatch is similar, but a bit different. There are many people here who played the beta and saw how much potential the game has for learning and competition. I played both StarCrafts heavily, but stopped playing SC2 because I started to feel burned out. I think that's also inherent to the genre.
I played Classic WoW through Cataclysm, but hated what Blizzard had done to the talent system. I also hated that it moved away from a "world" you had to physically travel through, and to city hubs where you played through the UI.
I tried Hearthstone and immediately hated it, as an MTG player.
I tried Heroes of the Storm when my work friends wanted to play, but it was total garbage coming from DotA. (They don't want to play DotA because it's too hard, and they admit it now.)
So when my friend told me that Overwatch was in an open beta and that he and other friends had been playing, I was skeptical. I was thoroughly suspicious of Blizzard at this point, and thought Overwatch would be yet more garbage. I asked him what kind of pay system it was using, if it was some kind of shit like HotS and LoL. When he said it's a one-time buy I relaxed. So I tried it, and it was surprisingly good. I would have to see the ranked system to make my final judgement, but I think $40 is cheap enough for something that should easily give a few hundred hours of play.
Perhaps it's easy to like because there's nothing to compare it to. We don't have to compare our feelings of Diablo III to Diablo II, or WoW expansion D to WoW expansion B. People draw comparisons to TF2, and I've played TF2. I think there is lots of overlap, but Overwatch has different mechanics. There aren't as many tricky things to do, but there is more built-in movement and better map design. The mechanics are also more punishing (lots of ways to die very fast) unless you can react extremely quickly or aim very well.
