People only like bosses because they're easy. That way when they find people who dislike their favorite boss they can gloat about how easy it was and how much "fun" they had fighting it when in reality all the fun is derived from the struggles of other people.

OP assumed he would be recognizable to anyone on the board because we've been talking about him and his game nonstop for months.

Do you even play videogames mate?

Multiple stages to the fight, includes a cutscene in between, very tense and dramatic. The Lothric twins followed the same formula and they're revered for the same reasons, though they were a bit easier IMO.

I play on PC. I am aware of Bloodborne and some detail but not the bosses/enemies in particular.

Do yourself a favor and at least listen to his soundtrack. It's an incredible boss fight and should be experienced on some level.

I think it really is a shame Bloodborne wasn't released on other consoles.
I guess on the one hand they could focus all their time on just the one version, but it's such a good game (I would argue the best in the 'series') and it's a shame that many people missed out on it.

best design

that build up in the base game

that challenging and visually satisfying moveset.

best incarnation of the moonlight sword as both a weapon and lorewise

that opening cutscene and his inhuman screech, motherfucker is the apex predator of the Hunter's Nightmare

You can save that skeleton.

that midfight cutscene and that amazing Aah, you were at my side all along voice and those amazing horse whinnies

that fucking second phase where TODAY IS THE DAY LUDWIG LEARNS TO WALK UPRIGHT

that small nod to Artorias being the first boss of the dlc is a fallen hero wielding a sword in his left hand

Best tragic death scene and lore exposition and bonus secret dialogue he gives you as a literal talking head after

Phase 1 felt felt like a Monster Hunter battle using Bloodborne mechanics. I got my ass handed to me so many times but when I started getting patterns and movement down I felt like a boss. I went from getting owned in about 3 seconds to getting through phase 1 without a scratch. What initially felt like a near impossible task actually proved extremely doable with practice. Good times.
>>
>>338132215
The fight flows perfectly. The entrance sets up the first part of the fight, name dropping an important figure in the lore. It begins with a crazy overhead slash, starting the fight almost immediately. It's fast paced, frantic fight against an aggressive beast. And then...

"Ahhh you were at my side all along. My one true mentor...my guiding moonlight."

And the music changes, the boss' name changes, the entire fight changes. No longer a beast being fought, but a warrior of moonlight. Still fast paced, but more of a stand off against hunters, one a beast and one a hunter of beasts.

So the entire base game has a lot going on about this guy, Ludwig. We know who he was, and his purpose, but never met the nerd, or know his fate.
So you enter what is essentially Hunter Hell, and at the end of a river of blood is a horse-man-mutant that has lost its mind. The horse-man-mutant being directly influenced by Buddhist depictions of tortured/torturing fiends in a layer of hell.
Layers like onions, onions are like Bloodborne, which means Bloodborne is like an Ogre. Ogres are green, as is envy traditionally. What does that mean? Never ever.
He's aggressive as fuck. The arena is deeply unsettling, the music is good. You whittle him down, avoiding his pretty great moveset, and then it happens. He notices the one thing that helps him regain a semblance of his mind, despite being an abomination, he's such a strong mother fucker that even in this state he's capable of remembering his purpose - because of a sword. He gets a new moveset, the music transitions to something different, and the whole tone of the fight changes.

Good boss, 9/10.

It was a semi-benevolent Great One that was aiding the hunters to fight the scourge. It chose you to kill Mergo, because Mergo would have destroyed mankind.
>>
>>338137460
About half of them, actually. It's just that the best ones do have chanting.

It's actually not random chanting, though, it does have consistent lyrics throughout, usually Sanguine, but you also get things like maleditcus and inficimur. Unlike Souls, two hostile areas actually have background music. One is called Soothing Melody and the other Hail the Nightmare.

Seems based on Nyarlathotep, so possibly shares the same purpose. Also seems that Great Ones dislike other Great Ones, so you're pushed in to killing those. I'm not sure if your power is harvested to a degree, so you pose no threat to Moon Presence and continue to watch over the dream, but that's what it seems like to me.
I don't have a great understanding of the game though.

Blood Starved Beast and Lullaby for Mergo are completely non-lyrical, though and you'll probably hear the former over and over and over if you go into Chalice dungeons. Soothing Hymn is background music to Upper Cathedral Ward that has no singers. Orphan of Kosm's theme doesn't get lyrics until his second phase.

I expected him to be just a beast boss even though i've already noticed a sword on his back in his intro. But the start of a second phase is so masterfully done and powerful and second phase is so visually impressive with enormous moonlight beams filling the screen he skyrocketed to being one of my favorite bosses ever. Godly OST as well.
>>
>>338136932
Why don't you just back-up your save?

That way you can kill him as many times as you want without needing to do an entire playthrough each time.
>>
>>338138729
Thanks, anon.
This is really nice thread.
>>
>>338138673
I guess if it was that or the Beast Cutter, I'd take the Cutter. But a flail weapon does sound cool too. I wish there were more trick weapons that changed up the pattern of a small cutting implement that turns into a large, heavy swinging weapon. More stuff like the Boom Hammer, the Amygdalan Arm, and Simon's Bowblade, for example.

>>
>>338138583
I think the theme is just a lot better, it's easy for dark fantasy to become stale. Especially considering they weren't really doing much different from DeS, it follows the same beaten path, but doesn't have a lot of what carried DaS; the NPCs, they added a lot of depth to that world. They try to invoke some fond memories, using designs similar to earlier games, and showing you the recurring theme which is ironically the repetition of its world. There's not much to look at and think "wow, that's new", and that makes it feel a bit boring. But I liked what it did, I liked a lot of the bosses, and genuinely consider it better than other Souls titles for its consistency.
>>
>>338138948
From the look of it, and assuming it did change to beast cutter, I'm not sure the change would be much more than cosmetic.
Maybe the flail would have had physics and trailed along the ground, but I imagine something like that would work basically the same as Beast Cutter. Maybe it would have a combo of serrated and blunt damage.
>>
>>338138948
There's a lantern flail in the original concepts, I think. I love the idea of that, but it'd probably just play like a slower, hard hitting canewhip.
>>
>>338138958
I'm also one of those weird faggots who found the first phase easier than the second.
>>
>>338139098
Shit, that sounds awesome. I always like it when games take something not intended as a weapon and make it into one. I'm kind of surprised there were no fishing-themed trick weapons in the Hamlet, like a giant hook or something.

Kind of like how they fooled us with the Lovecraft shit in all the marketing martial before the base game released

Ebrietas was in the Grand Cathedral in the Project Beast leaks, and Amygdala was clinging to a building in the alpha, both were blatantly on display, but never elaborated on.

Similarly, Ludwig's sword was always on his back and glimpsed during the previews for the Old Hunters, and we could guess it was the Moonlight Greatsword based on Ludwig's Holy Blade, but it was never elaborated on save for them mentioning his second phase was disabled.

Something like Lullaby for Mergo is much more memorable for me than the rest of it.

Maybe set in their capital, with you needing Yharnam Stone to access the place. With final boss being Oedon and you needing 3 cords to fight him.

I think, regardless of what you think of Bloodborne, that its two stage boss mechanic was the best addition to the series out of any game.

Oceiros is very memorable if you look at creepy details of his boss battle.
He's holding an invisible child in first stage and tries to protect him from you.
In second stage he goes mad and slams the poor baby into the ground, starting to run around with still alive and crying baby in one of his hands. Every time he slams that hand into the earth you can hear a baby cry and sometimes see a small explosion.

This, together with his connection to time/space travel shenanigans and dragons makes him immensely creepy and way more memorable than pretty bland Vendrick.

Except Artorias isn't left handed.

it's the L2 poke

the das2 weapon description says all wielders of the blade were left handed
>>
>>338142338
maybe not in the lore, but for all intents and purposes in-game he is, it's a thematic tie.

>the das2 weapon description
irrelevant
nor ds1 nor ds3 state anything like that and Artorias had a greatshield before leaving it with Sif
>>

>lame spank-ass boss fight
>seath rip off
>no real impact to the lore
>memorable

I got fed up with crying babies with Mergo
>>
>you will never fall asleep embraced by a Great One's tentacles

That's nonesense. It's not benevolent or malicious, it merely wants a surrogate child, and was being called by Mergo's cries. It's presence triggers the cursed blood and turns men into beast, but it's just a side effect. Gherman who is currently the surrogate, makes use of being trapped by MP to aid his fellow hunters by providing them a safe haven, and he has you kill Mergo because he's just doing his job. Either by taking his place or killing MP you are freeing him of his incarceration.

like it or not, Das2 is canon

nothing in Das3 retcons anything in Das2

artorias held the shield in his right hand
>>
>>338142481
>Artorias had a greatshield before leaving it with Sif

And he MOST definitely could not have that in his right hand.
>>
>>338142514
>no real impact to the lore
he's actually one of the main reasons world is so fucked up but keep posting irrelevant greentext
>>
>>338142374
If you want to get technical it says everyone who INHERITED the sword was left handed, not the original owner. Theres also the small detail of whether it's even the same sword seeing as how Drangleic and Lordran are nowhere near each other. When you fight him his left arm is clearly broken due to protecting Sif with his shield arm (left) in the abyss.
