Any tips for a new player? Just made it to Taurus demon and got destroyed. Playing as a wanderer by the way.

Basically this whole image.

This image is stupid if only for the fact it discourages discussion.

Use a shield, OP. Most attacks, even from bosses, can be blocked. Don't listen to faggots who say using a shield is for plebs. They're super useful throughout the game and there isn't a person on this board who didn't use one at some point. Grass Crest shield is good and can be found in Darkroot Basin near a Black Knight.

What does kindling a bonfire do? What does humanity even do?
>>
>>338121180
bow and arrow are your friends
vitality 20 is your first priority
don't kill npc for no reason
pyromancy doesn't require any stat, just leveling the hand, so it's interesting
>>
>>338122212
humanity raises your discovery stat = more loot
kindling bonfire = upgrade from giving 5 flasks to 10 flasks
>>
>>338122212
Kindling makes that bonfire give you 10 estus flask instead of 5 and humanity will turn you human or use 1 to kindle a bonfire
>>
>>338122416
Okay so kindling seems worthwhile. Is there an amount of humanity that would be too much? Like how much would max out my chances for good loot?
>>
>>338122527
up to 9
but you can lose them if you die and don't grab your green cloud back

so using them to kindle every bonfire is a good strategy
>>
>>338122212
Humanity can be used to heal you FULLY, as well as making you human, meaning you can summon/be summoned/do PvP stuff. Konglong a bonfire gives you more esrus chugs. You should kindle every bonfire you come across since it only costs a single humanity and the extra chugs are really helpful.
>>
>>338121180
Use Firebombs to kill him. At least that's what I did.
>>
>>338122212
"Soft" humanity that's held (and not "hard" humanity, which is when it's in item form) also raises your defense stat for each held humanity, if only slightly.

It makes a difference when people twink themselves out and hold 99 soft humanity, and since Dark Souls has a flat damage reduction, if you get invaded at a low level by such a person you might not be able to hurt them.

The item discovery boost caps out at 10, though, and holding so many is generally risky if you die twice in a row without getting it back.
>>
>>338121180
Climb the tower -> plunging attack with your heaviest weapon while he's at the foot of it -> stab in balls
There, RIP Taurus

there

Grab the zweihander
>>
>>338123305
>if you get invaded at a low level by such a person you might not be able to hurt them.
that explains a lot...
>>
>>338122527
Humanity also boosts resistances.
>>
>>338123527
>Grab the Zweihander

Actually a meme weapon. The claymore is 100% better. Very similar power with a WAY better moveset. Probably the best sword in the game all things considered. If you wanna go full easy mode though, getting a BKS drop from the Black Knight in Undead Burg or Darkroot is definitely the way to go.

Also, on the topic of defense:
Armor matters.
Though it may only make the difference between dying in five hits as opposed to four, that may be all you need to survive. And poise will let you stay in control when you're being wailed on.

But, no damage is always better than any, so learn to dodge or use a 100% block shield.
Dodging is generally better than blocking.
Taurus demon: you CAN block his attacks, but it'll drain your stamina and throw you backwards.
OR, you can roll INTO his attacks, phasing through with your invincibility frames, and end up at his feet, ready to slice into him.
Rolling is based on equip load breakpoints, so while <25% will make dodging easier, the moment you do get hit is gonna hurt a lot more than it would at <50%.
>>
>>338121670
Yes. Shields for pve are excellent. Just don't solidly rely on them, roll as well when it comes to heavy attacks or if you got a small shield. Blocking and rolling in conjunction is the way to go. Also in the church after the Taurus demon, the knights with the big long shields drop a really good one, along with solid armor and a good dex based sword since your a wanderer
>>
>>338123830
broadsword is great, it's fast, it's efficient
>>
>>338123952
>Can't upgrade armour in DaS3
>End up with a bunch of titanite and nothing to spend it on

Miyazaki can be kinda retarded.
>>
>>338124012
broadsword < longsword < balder sword
>>
>>338124012
To be fair a longsword will carry you through the game easily. Any weapon can. Its really about what you feel comfortable using. But, like with anything, some things are more equal than others.
>>
>>338123830
Pancaking enemies is good. Also the memehander is good for knocking big skellies apart or stunning big enemies. Also good for parry-fags and parrying enemies like the hollow thieves or balder knights.
>>
>>338124191
This

Grab whatever the fuck you want
As long as it doesn't do shit damage compared to your alternatives and you like the moveset, that's that.
And you can and should carry multiple weapons for different situations. This includes element infused weapons, cause certain enemies have elemental weaknesses.

I started as Wanderer and really liked the Balder Side Sword at first because it has speed, reach, and DEX scaling, but I ended up maining the Claymore by the end of it all.
>>
>>338124454
Same here for my first playthrough. I picked wanderer and tried Dex/int, as my bro said he heard it was a good way to go. Barely leveled vit, used claymlrw nonstop, blocked only and used havels on tough fights. I did better on my 2nd char, a faith/str tank. Shoulda put mor vit, but 40 end/50str with black iron armor, arty shield and bkugs smashed bosses like nobody's business
>>
Never put points into Resistance.

Keep talking to NPCs until they repeat themselves. Then do it again the next time you see them.

You can usually defeat any enemy, no matter their size, if you're able to take them on 1v1.

The attack animations are long and committed - once a swing has started, it can't usually be stopped unless enough damage is dealt to stagger. This is true both for you and for enemies. Understanding when to punish an enemy's committed attack, and when to commit your own attacks to avoid being punished, is key to the combat system.

The best tip I can give you is, don't give up.
I was in your shoes a month ago, never played a DS game before. Now I in my NG+3.
Also:
>There are parts that are a nightmare, and you will say "why is this allowed?" If enemies and bosses are the problem, lern from your deaths and change your gameplay and equipment accordingly
>Use a good shield, like >>338121670 said. Don't bother with riposte in the beggining, you will have time do learn this when you are more proficient with the game.
>I recomend Havel's Ring, cause you will be able to put a heavy armor and maintain a somewhat mobility.
>Don't bother with Humanity and staying human in your first playtrough, cause you will be invaded and the chances are that the invader is better than you.
>If you like some equipment, give it a chance and upgrade it.
>If you keep dying and returning to the same bonfire, kindle to the max level. It will give you more flasks.
>>
dont want to derail the thread but i juat beast DS1, should i go to 2 or skip it and go to 3?
>>
>>338125406
>The attack animations are long and committed
There's also input queues. In most games you can cancel animations so you can dodge in the middle of an attack, but not so in Dark Souls, so mashing attack or roll can get you killed.
>>
>>338121670
you only really need a shield for 2 fights. O&S and Manus.
>>
>>338121180
I just started playing too, anon.
I forget what my starting class is, but it's a battle axe + shield. Shit seems OP. Only time I die is when I accidentally aggro one of those black knight dudes, or fucking targeting decides to throw me off a wall.

I beat Taurus demon first try. Wasn't even hard. He swings, you back up, then hit him once. Rinse and repeat.
I didn't even manage to get the falling attack near the beginning. Didn't need it.

I will say the game is way more fun than I thought it would be. I'm enjoying it.

Real quick though, is there a way to compare stats on weapons/armor without having to manually memorize is, then back out of the menu/shop over and over again?
>>
>>338125901
3 is better than 2 but 2 is still worth playing. 3 has better world design and the combat feels a little off in 2.
>>
>>338126131
equip one weapon in right hand
equip one weapon in left hand

look at the left and right hand values
>>
>>338125970
Those are two fights you don't need a shield for. Especially Manus with his ridiculous combos. Your stamina would be gone in a flash if you tried to block that shit. O&S is just a case of kiting around the area and getting hits in when you can.

Major stuff ive killed:
Butt demon
Tauros demon
Red drake
Hydra?
Capara demon
That skull dragon in valley of drakes.
I think I have to go to the deep but where is that? Also I dont get why everyone shit themselves over capara demon. I did it in one go.
>>
>>338121180
If you're having problem with Taurus demon, learn to love bull cock. I'm serious, if you roll forward into his crotch 99.5% of his attacks will miss you, with only one having a small AoE that can stagger you, and cause a little bit of chip damage.

Either.
If you ever want to play 2, play it before 3.

Even though 3 takes after 1 more than it does 2, there's still plenty of things they carried over from 2, and I still put hundreds of hours into 2. Especially since it had great PvP for dueling. It also improves on a lot of the mechanics from 1 and has many pretty and unique environments.

The main problem is that you're very aware that you're playing a videogame because the world isn't as well designed as in the other games, and because there's a certain floatiness to everything (including metal not feeling like metal most of the time, not just movement).

But, it's still a great game, so I say go for it.

>>
>>338125901
All three games are worth it. Play them all. Some would seek to dissuade you from this task. These people are deceivers. For real tho. It is a rough transition from 1 to 2. Shields are much harder to come by early on. Other than knight and warrior, you can't even use the heavier 100.0 def shields in the beginning. Get used to rolling. I turtled my way thru 1 and tried to be a Mage first time thru 2. It was shocking. Combat feels a little different and backstabs are crap. It is some peoples favorite one and that alone makes it worth a single playthrough.
>>
>>338126365
You get a key for killing the Capra demon. Keep going down the stairs to the right of where the boss fog was and you'll end up opening the shortcut back to Firelink by going up, and in the Depths by going down.

If you killed the undead dragon I think (?) you can skip most of two areas by going in from the back door, but you'll miss items and I think they're fun areas to play even though most people disagree.

not with the sword, old glitch that was around for a while right after release

basically you'd use an item that was essentially a rapid fire damage tool with infinite use, but right before the damage part you could press down on the dpad and swap to whatever item was underneath it while still holding the use item button

if you put one consumable soul there and then swapped to it mid-damage item action, it would give you that soul's soul value 4-5 times every second infinitely for as long as you'd hold down the button.

It also worked with other items, and people would invade and shoot firebombs or drop prism stones at the same rapacity. It was funny and incredibly destructive.
>>
>>338126875
Not if you go to the Depths.

You can also go to the rest of the forest (go straight instead of right when you get down there from the blacksmith)

Or be suicidally brave and go into the Catacombs or the sunken city, of New Londo both from Firelink Shrine.
Special equipment makes both areas easier, but except for New Londo's boss, both areas can be completed without special equipment, and both have important rewards.

Clear the catacombs as early as you can, but leave after you kill the boss and get the Rite of Kindling. Being able to kindle bonfires to 20 sippies will make things much more bearable.

If you're proceeding through pitch darkness, you've gone too far.

There's only one fog door, and it's the boss. If you made it to the wheels you're definitely there.

You can skip most of the level and get down to the bottom by making some really specific jumps, look it up.
Defeating the boss nets you the Rite of Kindling and lets you kindle twice more so bonfires give you TWENTY estus.

It doesn't really work for the stuff it is supposed to work against.
>>
>>338130648
It gives you higher resistances to both elemental damage and status effects. Both of which is gained by wearing armor, so it a pointless stat.

>BKS
>not BKH

But wouldn't the resistance bonuses from RES just stack on top of what you get from armor?
>>

Did someone say Black Knight?

yes i know it's the gargoyle helm, the end goal is an eccentric swiss mercenary style

Enough prism stone drops would crash the game for everyone in that world
>>
>>338131157
It does, but you see the gains from leveling RES isn't that much to begin with.

This is my third serious playthrough of the game. I don't know if I just got lucky or if my game is broken, because Crestfallen is also talking about NPCs I haven't met yet

i don't know which one i want to use for fuck's sake
>>

not to any noticeable degree

i even made a build that was 90% vitality and resistance with the most protective armor and a ring that increased armor at 99 humanity to get those defenses as high as possible, and honestly the difference was so slight that i barely noticed it despite having 500 defense instead of 400. It would be better to just put those points into things that increase your dmg so you arent gimped with a lightning / chaos infusion.

It was this way with me too.
Started last week.

none of them, they make the game so easy it stops being challenging
>>
>>338131329
>>338131525
I guess I'll keep that in mind then. I leveled it to 15 but then stopped so I could use the black knight sword so I haven't entirely crippled my stats
>>
>>338131157
The gain is so small that it's essentially meaningless
>oh wow now bleed procs on me in 4 hits instead of 3, that was sure worth 20 levels

PLEAAASE add this to your texture override folder, vanilla font looks like shit in low res.
